On Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m., ETV’s Making It Grow! and First Lady Jenny Sanford invite viewers on a leisurely stroll through the graceful backdrop of flora at the Governor’s Mansion.

Hosted by Rowland Alston, the hour-long program takes a sweeping look at the gardens that dot the lawn of the Governor’s Mansion. From the popular wedding garden that was renovated in the 1980s by former First Lady Tunky Riley to the herb and vegetable gardens, stocked with organically grown blueberries, squash, green beans and cabbage, viewers will be captivated by the willowy expanse of foliage that carpets the landscape.

During the program, the first lady reflects on Mischief in the Mansion, the children’s history book penned by her four sons. When asked about it, she modestly says, “It takes you from a very basic perspective through the homes of the Governor’s mansion and the gardens and the grounds. But it also has some of their fun stories and things they like to do…it’s a fun little book.” Proceeds from the project, released in 2007, support the maintenance of the grounds.

Sanford also talks about the Oct. 17 event, Autumn at the Gardens, a lively celebration of the restoration of the Caldwell-Boylston Gardens at the Governor’s Mansion that’s open to the public.

Then, later in the broadcast, Dr. John Nelson with USC's A.C. Moore Herbarium has a little fun with viewers across the state in the Mystery Plant segment. Each week, this new, interactive feature offers clues about a “mystery” plant that viewers can call in and identify. The call-in number for this segment or for answers to your gardening questions during the show is 1-800-872-3881. Plant enthusiasts can also chat with Debbie Hayes at www.mig.org.
