March 26, 2006

Columbia, SC...ETV’s South Carolina Channel is bringing the acclaimed PBS documentary The Civil War: A Film by Ken Burns to its viewers on Sunday, April 9, 2006. The nine episode series will air in its entirety beginning at 11:00 a.m.

According to filmmaker Ken Burns, South Carolinians will enjoy the documentary due to the significant impact the state had on the Civil War.

“South Carolina was the most radical of the Southern states, and they felt it was their duty to throw off the tyrant of the North,” said Burns. Burns noted the specific prominence of Charleston Harbor in the beginning of the war, and the fall of Columbia during General Sherman’s “march to the sea” as the most prominent South Carolina contributions to the War and his film.

When The Civil War first aired in 1990, it quickly became must-watch television and the highest-rated series in PBS history, dramatically introducing viewers to a watershed conflict that ripped the country apart but ultimately helped forge a stronger nation.

The five-part film went on to win more than 40 major awards, including a Peabody, two Emmy Awards and the Peoples Choice Award.
