Columbia, SC...For more than two decades, Congressman John Spratt has been a symbol of political stamina, winning hard-fought campaigns that have facilitated an unbroken string of re-elections.  On Thursday, August 2 at 7:30 p.m., ETV’s “The Big Picture” presents “Spratt of South Carolina,” a documentary profiling the career of Fifth District Congressman John M. Spratt.  An encore presentation airs on Sunday, August 5 at 7:30 p.m.

This 30-minute program takes an intimate look at the life and accomplishments of the small-town, Yale-educated attorney, who presently sits among the highest-ranking Democrats in Congress as chair of the House Budget Committee.

Sprinkled throughout this production are interviews with colleagues and friends as well as past political opponents, such as Representative Carl L. Gullick (R-York) who ran against Spratt in 2000.  With a modest demeanor and hardy work ethic, Spratt has earned the respect of supporters and detractors on both sides of the aisle.  “I’ve had people come to me and say, ‘We’re thinking about running against John.’ And I’ve said, ‘you will not win that race...it cannot be won.  Trust me. I’ve been there...I’ve seen it,’” recalls Gullick.

Jane Spratt, wife of the seasoned statesman, lightheartedly recalls the adventurous family treks from York to Washington, D.C., that included three children, three cats and a dog.  Not surprisingly, others speak of Spratt’s “workhorse” approach to tackling the issues facing the Fifth District.  Overall, viewers will hear stories that paint a picture of the unflappable politician who continues to make a difference in a district that spans 14 counties.

Congressman and Democratic Majority Whip James E. Clyburn of the Sixth Congressional District and former U.S. Senator Ernest F. Hollings also offer commentary about Spratt’s acclaimed career.

“He is the most able fellow, probably, in the entire U.S. House of Representatives.  Well-schooled in defense...awfully talented and able.  And to my despair, he didn’t run for the senate, where he could have really gone straight to the top,” states Hollings.
