Former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, who reportedly has had a strained relationship with his own two children, and whose personal life has sparked an array of tabloid headlines, reacted strongly Tuesday when asked if he thought Bristol Palin’s pregnancy would detract from the Republican convention.

After beginning to answer straightforwardly, Giuliani—who is scheduled to deliver the keynote speech at the convention—appeared to change his mind and opted instead to lecture the questioner. “Frankly, you should be ashamed of yourself, asking that question,” said Giuliani. “This is a personal issue that the family is handling in the most appropriate way that it can be handled…other American families have had to handle this. They’re handling it in the most appropriate way possible. It doesn’t have the slightest—the slightest—relationship to a presidential campaign.

“And we’d be a better country if this was a thing where there was sort of an internal mechanism where journalists, and the journalistic community said, ‘Well, these are the things that we don’t give a lot of emphasis to,’” Giuliani added.

The exchange took place as Giuliani was exiting a breakfast held to thank the South Carolina and New Hampshire delegations. His comments can be heard on South Carolina ETV’s “The Big Picture on the Radio” Wednesday at 9 a.m.
