Program to Be Taped on Wednesday, Sep. 29 at 5:30 p.m.

For Immediate Release
September 23, 2010

Columbia, SC… The next episode of ETV's occasional series, "Take on the South" centers on two very popular sports, and asks which is the most popular in the South: Football or NASCAR? The program will be taped on Wednesday, Sept. 29 at 5:30 p.m. at ETV's Columbia studios, located at 1041 George Rogers Blvd., just a Hail Mary pass away from Williams Brice Stadium.

This episode will air in November, as NASCAR's Chase for the Cup kicks into high gear and college football wraps up the regular season and prepares for conference championships and the impending Bowl season.

Dr. Walter Edgar, host of ETV Radio's "Walter Edgar's Journal" and the Director of USC's Institute of Southern Studies, will moderate the debate between Dr. Harvey Jackson of Jacksonville State University, and Dr. Dan Pierce of University of North Carolina at Asheville.

During the hour-long show, Jackson will state his case for the dominance of football in Southern culture, while Pierce will argue that with the birth of NASCAR in North Carolina, it reigns supreme.

The public is invited to attend the taping of the program. For reservations, call Fran Johnson at (803) 737-8279.

"Take on the South" is produced by South Carolina ETV and is distributed nationally by the National Educational Telecommunications Association (NETA). Funding for the program was provided by the University of South Carolina's Institute for Southern Studies with a grant from the Watson-Brown Foundation. The program won a 2010 Southeast Regional Emmy award for set-design, and was also nominated in the "Informational/Instructional" programming category.
