Cynthia Hill, director of South Carolina ETV’s national presentation “A Chef’s Life,” won a daytime Emmy Friday for Outstanding Directing in a Lifestyle/Culinary/Travel Program.   Hill, a North Carolina native, worked in New York City before returning to North Carolina where she directs “A Chef’s Life.”  She has previously worked with MTV, Lifetime, and Nickelodeon.  Her documentaries have also aired on ETV’s independent film series “Southern Lens.”

“A Chef’s Life” follows Chef Vivian Howard and her family after they leave Manhattan and go home to Kinston, N.C.  In the series, Howard tracks down heirloom foods and recipes in the region and puts her decidedly original spin on each dish.  Now in its second season, the program won a Peabody Award in 2014.  It was also nominated for Outstanding Single Camera Photography, and for several James Beard Awards.

“A Chef’s Life” is one of several national presentations brought to PBS by SCETV.  In 2015, ETV has also been the national presenter for “Journey to Planet Earth” narrated by Matt Damon, “For Your Home,” now in its thirtieth season,  and “180 Days: Hartsville.”  SCETV’s Executive Producer for national programming is Amy Shumaker.  This August, ETV will host PBS’ Antiques Roadshow for the third time, this time in Charleston.

South Carolina ETV (presenting station) is the state's public educational broadcasting network.  Using television, radio and the web, SCETV's mission is to enrich lives by educating children, informing and connecting citizens, celebrating our culture and environment and instilling the joy of learning.  South Carolina ETV currently presents A Chef’s Life, Expeditions, and For Your Home on public television in addition to national radio productions Song Travels, Piano Jazz, Spoleto Festival USA, and World of Opera.

At the mention of “Bull Street,” many South Carolinians know that the term refers to the S.C. State Hospital, located in downtown Columbia. A new Carolina Stories production, Down on Bull Street, May 7th at 8 p.m. on South Carolina ETV tells the rich and complex history of this mental health institution, which first opened its doors in 1827.

Filmmaker Lynn Cornfoot said, ““As a resident of Columbia, I pass by the Bull Street facility on a daily basis.  It was amazing to discover how much history was right under my nose, hidden by the walls surrounding the property. It is impossible to share all this history in one hour, but I feel this documentary will educate our audience and promote discussion on the topic of mental illness.”

The South Carolina Lunatic Asylum was the original facility designated for statewide treatment of those suffering from mental illness. Renowned architect Robert Mills was commissioned by the legislature to design the building.  Mills drew from Quaker theories of moral treatment for his plan – a new concept that promoted healing through consideration for a patient’s emotions and environmental concerns.  As the hospital grew, it became self-sustaining with a bakery, farm, dairy, and laundry; but was always self contained, surrounded by a wall to keep the patients separated from the outside world.

Dedicated psychologists, physicians, and others left their marks on the institution, including James Woods Babcock, who was superintendent of the hospital at the turn of the century. Babcock began a training school for nurses, lobbied for better treatment for African Americans, and renamed the facility The S.C. Hospital for the Insane. The Civil War, World War I and World War II took their tolls on the institution.  Conditions and treatment improved with the guidance of Dr. William S. Hall, a WWII physician who would dedicate nearly 50 years of his life working for the institution as superintendent and then State Commissioner of the newly-formed S.C. Department of Mental Health. Civil rights pioneer Modjeska Simkins demanded better conditions for African American patients and by 1969 South Carolina became the first state in the south to have all of its mental health facilities accredited.

As the move for deinstitutionalization took hold, this centralized model of treatment was phased out, and by the 1980s most patients were integrated back into their communities via mental health clinics and centers. Although the William S. Hall Psychiatric Institute is still in use on the property, most services at the Bull Street campus were discontinued, leaving the empty buildings a reminder of what once was. With the recent sale and revitalization of the area, Down on Bull Street is a final farewell to this 181-acre historic institution.

Down on Bull Street is made possible in part by the Richland County Conservation Commission, the Humanities Council of S.C., and the Mental Health America of S.C. It was written, produced and directed by Lynn Cornfoot; and narrated by Beryl Dakers.  The program will also be re-broadcast Monday, May 11 at 8 p.m. on the South Carolina Channel.

A special preview and panel discussion of the film LAST DAYS OF VIETNAM will be held in the Bostick Auditorium at the Richland County Library’s main branch in Columbia, Sunday, March 22 at 3pm.  The film, directed and produced by Rory Kennedy, explores the chaotic final days of the Vietnam War, when North Vietnamese forces closed in on Saigon as South Vietnamese resistance crumbled. With the clock ticking and the city under fire, an unlikely group of heroes took matters into their own hands.   The film was nominated for an Academy Award.  The thirty minute preview will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by Tut Underwood of ETV Radio.

The scheduled panelists include Luther J. Battiste III, Khue Nguyen, Julea Phan Ingold, Angelo Perri (U.S. Army Colonel, retired), Eric Seymore (Chief Warrant Officer Five, retired), and Major General Robert E. Livingston, Jr., S.C. Adjutant General.

“ETV is proud to partner with the Richland Library and The State Paper to provide a public screening and conversation to focus on the issues raised in this extraordinary documentary,” said Linda O’Bryon, ETV President and CEO.  “Forty years after the fall of Saigon the impact of the Vietnam War is still being felt.  We encourage the public to join us on Sunday.”

The full film will air April 28th at 9pm on ETV.

South Carolina ETV commands two hours of nationwide prime time when 180 Days: Hartsville premieres on PBS Tuesday, March 17th at 8:00 PM EST with two back-to-back episodes.

180 Days: Hartsville is a documentary in which small-town stories and surprising victories bring viewers to the frontlines of classroom challenges and successes.  Without narration, the film compresses one school year (180 days) into two hours.  Camera crews spent an entire school year inside two Hartsville, S.C. schools to create the film.

“We are proud that this effort is a collaboration of SCETV and the National Black Programming Consortium,” said Linda O’Bryon, president and CEO of SCETV. “To see an ETV co-production broadcast for two hours during national primetime is impressive, but no more so than the stories the film tells.”

Viewers will meet educators, families, and business leaders working hard to improve education for children.  Principal Tara King has gone from being a troubled student to working to save a troubled student.   Thornwell Elementary School principal Julie Mahn, daughter of sharecroppers, is the first in her family to go to college. Monay Parran, herself a high school dropout, demonstrates the varied pressures on single mothers as she struggles to raise three children while juggling two jobs. Her son Rashon, a fifth grade student in West Hartsville Elementary, is a bright boy but his behavior is threatening his own educational future. Pierre Brown is not only one of the only male teachers that we see in the film, he’s also one of the only male role models in his students’ lives. Harris DeLoach, executive chairman of the Hartsville-based Sonoco Products Company, a diversified global packaging company, realizes that if his company is going to have a qualified employee base, he and the community need to support education.  He led Sonoco to invest $5 million in the area’s public school system to close the achievement gap. Darlington County Schools Superintendent Dr. Eddie Ingram, a thirty-year veteran of public education, is the new kid on the block, mulling how his schools will fulfill the vision DeLoach describes.

“This is not simply a television program; it’s an event,” said Dr. Brent Nelsen, chair of the ETV Commission.  “Seminars and screenings around the country are inviting local leaders to review and discuss Hartsville’s experience and what it means for their own communities, from Hartford and Jackson to New York City, Detroit, and Los Angeles.”

Following the national broadcast, South Carolina ETV will air a local one-hour follow-up at 10:00 PM EST with education leaders and others from the film.  The three-hour block will re-air Thursday, March 19th on ETV beginning at 7:00 PM EST, and Monday, March 23rd at 8:00PM EST on The South Carolina Channel.

The team behind the 2013 Peabody Award-winning documentary 180 Days: A Year Inside An American High School, headed to the South to take a fresh look at the nation’s educational crisis. Co-directors Jacquie Jones and Garland McLaurin traveled to Hartsville, South Carolina, part of the band of mostly southern and western states where more than half of students in 2013 qualified for free and reduced-price school lunch, a widely-used measure of poverty.  Hartsville, with a median income of less than $30,000, has the majority of its population hovering around the poverty line.

“With poor children now representing a new majority of public school students, it is more critical than ever that successful models in education be explored as part of the school reform movement to ensure the American dream is attainable for all of our children,” said Jones, who also serves as an executive producer of the film. “Hartsville has proven that if the right forces in a determined community come together to put children first, that tangible results will follow.”

The series was funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) under American Graduate: Let’s Make it Happen, a nationwide public media education initiative.

“The Hartsville story highlights the impact community leaders, educators, volunteers and parents working together can have in diminishing the influence of poverty in determining a child’s academic success and moving the needle on the educational outcomes of an entire school district,” said Patricia de Stacy Harrison, president and CEO of CPB. “They are true American Graduate Champions for the path they have created to graduation and economic success for the children in their community.” American Graduate Champions are those parents and volunteers who play an active role in improving educational outcomes for students.

180 Days: Hartsville is produced by the National Black Programming Consortium (NBPC), the primary presenter of stories about the Black experience on public television, and South Carolina ETV. Executive producers include Jacquie Jones, and Amy Shumaker, South Carolina ETV executive producer of content.

About American Graduate
American Graduate: Let’s Make It Happen is helping local communities identify and implement solutions to the high school dropout crisis. American Graduate demonstrates public media's commitment to education and its deep roots in every community it serves. Beyond providing programming that educates, informs and inspires, public radio and television stations—locally owned and operated—are an important resource in helping to address critical issues, such as the dropout rate.

More than 800 partnerships have been formed locally through American Graduate, and CPB is working with Alma and Colin Powell’s America's Promise Alliance and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Through ETV Streamline, ETV provides classroom content via the internet with safe, standards-based curriculum. First an affiliate of NET (National Educational Television) and now a member of PBS, South Carolina ETV became a producer and presenter of national public television programs, including Firing Line with William F. Buckley, Jr., The Magic School Bus, NatureScene, and A Chef’s Life (Peabody winner). The ETV Radio service produces national series Marian McPartland’s Piano Jazz (Peabody winner), Song Travels with Michael Feinstein, Chamber Music from Spoleto Festival USA (international distribution), and World of Opera.

South Carolina ETV Radio and Clemson University have announced that the noontime radio magazine Your Day will end production November 13th, 2014 after fourteen years. Your Day, a radio magazine produced as a public service of Clemson University Broadcast Productions, provided programming in the public radio tradition, but with a South Carolina flavor.  It was broadcast over the stations of the ETV Radio network.

"We at Clemson appreciate our longstanding collaboration with SCETV and look forward to developing new concepts for statewide broadcast,” said Cathy Sams, Clemson University Chief Public Affairs Officer, “With the launch of ClemsonTV in October, a web-based university television network, we will continue to make public service programming available directly to the people of South Carolina on demand."

“We’ve been grateful for a wonderful run,” said Shari Hutchinson of ETV Radio and Television, “but the time has come to move on to other projects.  We look forward to future collaborations with Clemson.”

Clemson University and ETV will continue their long partnership on television, with the Emmy-winning Making It Grow! and the nationally syndicated Expeditions with Patrick McMillan.

Your Day featured stories and interviews about South Carolina.  It also opened the phone lines for caller questions on daily topics, ranging from healthy eating, to pet advice, to tech reviews.

ETV Radio program director John Gasque says ETV Radio will expand its current program offerings on each service. Classical Music from ETV Radio expands into the noon hour on music stations, the news service will feature Here and Now.

Walter Edgar’s Journal, the popular South Carolina history and culture program, will continue Fridays at noon.
