ETV’s Examines Issues Facing the Palmetto State's Latino Population in May
For Immediate Release
April 12, 2006
Columbia, SC… With day after day of reports on immigration reform (and with Cinco de Mayo right around the corner), ETV will be featuring two special productions that focus on South Carolina's growing Latino community:
ETV Forum: The Hispanic Presence in SC is an hour-long discussion that examines the impact the Latino population has had on South Carolina's economy, healthcare and schools. The program, which airs Wednesday, May 3 at 7 p.m., will also touch on immigration issues, including footage from the Monday, April 10 march on the State House by the Coalition of New South Carolinians. Among the panel of guests for the forum are:
- Irma Santana, director of the Coalition of New South Carolinians
- Edgar Medina, president of the SC Hispanic Leadership Council
- Dr. Elaine Lacy, director of the Consortium for Latino Immigration Studies, USC
- Ivan Segura, community liaison for Hispanic Outreach
- Lee McElveen, Hispanic/Latino Coordinator, Commission on Minority Affairs
- Dr. Jose Rivera, Family Health Center
- Maria Bravo-Carrillo, USC student and narrator of Nuestro Futuro
The next day, Thursday, May 4 at 10 p.m., ETV presents Nuestro Futuro (Our Future), the latest program in the popular Carolina Stories series.
Nuestro Futuro puts a South Carolina face on the plight of the immigrant. Viewers will meet Maria Bravo-Carrillo, 22, a USC senior who moved here when she was 7 and is now an American citizen working towards an accounting degree. They'll also get to know Griselda Lopez--who came to the U.S. illegally when she was about 2--and who is now awaiting her day in court. Lopez was arrested in Charleston after her illegal status was discovered as she translated information for her aunt at the Immigration office.
From the families who have a satellite dish so they can see Mexican soccer games and soap operas, to the families forced to grapple with a much different educational system in SC--where, unlike in Mexico, parents are encouraged to be involved actively in their children's education--Nuestro Futuro depicts the struggles, the separations and the celebrations of the Latin American immigrant in SC. An encore presentation of Nuestro Futuro will air on Thursday, May 25 at 10 p.m.
