Columbia, SC…On Thursday, Aug. 7 at 10 p.m., the eve of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, ETV will broadcast the Southern Lens documentary Beyond the Classroom: China. Winner of three Telly awards and a CINE Golden Eagle Award, the 30-minute program chronicles the study-abroad experience of 22 USC students who traveled across China for two weeks last summer as a part of the Capstone Abroad Program.
Produced by International Programs at USC and directed by USC Associate Professor of Media Arts Laura Kissel, Beyond the Classroom: China is a captivating tour of the rich cultural and historical landscape of the country. From Beijing and Tiananmen Square to The Great Wall and Shanghai, to the Buddhist holy site of Wutaishan, this program provides a guided exploration of the People’s Republic, as seen through the eyes of USC’s Capstone scholars. Along the way, viewers will also witness the surprisingly familiar interactions between USC students and their counterparts from the Foreign Language School in Xi’an, as they discuss a host of social issues including pollution, economic growth, trade and tourism.
