ETV to Premiere Local Filmmaker’s New Documentary
“My Name Ain’t Eve”

For Immediate Release
February 5, 2010

Columbia, SC…On Thursday, Feb. 11 at 10 p.m., ETV presents My Name Ain’t Eve. This 30-minute Southern Lens program, the brainchild of ETV media producer and independent filmmaker Urica P. Floyd, is a candid and sometimes humorous personal documentary that explores the significance of names in the African-American community.

Through interviews with family members, strangers, and scholars, Floyd investigates the historical paths, traditions, and contemporary methods used to name African-American children, as well as the evolution of the names for the Black race.

According to Dr. Nemata Blyden at George Washington University, “Many people have understood the name changes among African Americans from Negro to Black to African American as random. It’s not quite as random as we think. There’s always a historical and cultural context to the name changes…there are political circumstances that necessitate that change.”

Throughout the documentary, insightful points of view are shared by:

  • Dr. Cleveland Sellers, President, Vorhees College
  • Dr. Nemata Blyden, George Washington University, African American Studies
  • Dr. Kimberly Eison Simmons, Anthropologist/African American Studies, USC
  • Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation

My Name Ain’t Eve was created because of my interest in the names in my own family. By examining names in the African-American community, the film has a more global perspective and interest,” says Filmmaker Urica P. Floyd. “I hope viewers who tune in will gain a better understanding of some of the historical influences in our society that not only help to shape our names as individuals, but also our population as African-American citizens of the United States.”

This film was funded in part by the Humanities Council, SC, the Cultural Council of Richland and Lexington Counties, the SC Arts Commission, which receives funding from NEA, and the John and Susan Bennett Memorial Arts Fund of The Coastal Community Foundation, SC.

Southern Lens tells stories that reflect the diversity of Southern culture as told by the Southerners themselves. With genres ranging from thought-provoking documentaries to humorous tales to thrilling dramas from Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, these programs illustrate the irrepressible spirit that defines the South.
