South Carolina ETV
ETV to Premiere Aiken-Based Documentary
“Edgewood: Stage of Southern History”
For Immediate Release
September 8, 2010
Columbia, SC…On Thursday, September 16 at 10 p.m., ETV airs the television premiere of the Southern Lens historical documentary Edgewood: Stage of Southern History. The hour-long program explores how Edgewood, the backcountry-style plantation house, has served as a “stage” upon which colorful dramas of important Southern history have occurred. Even though many of the events took place in or around this structure, their ultimate significance in the shaping of American history is profound.
The docudrama, as narrated from the perspective of the house which was originally built in 1829 near Edgefield, SC by Governor Andrew Pickens for his son, Francis, tells the stories of the extraordinary people who lived, worked and visited the house over its many years of existence. Tales in this uniquely-recounted documentary include accounts from the:
• Antebellum Era
• War Between the States
• Visit to the Czarist Russia by Francis Pickens
• Suffrage movement
• Winter Colony settlement in Aiken
• Civil Rights Era
• Creation of the Savannah River Site
Today, the house is known as the Pickens-Salley House and is located on the University of South Carolina-Aiken campus.
Southern Lens tells stories that reflect the diversity of Southern culture as told by the Southerners themselves. With genres ranging from thought-provoking documentaries to humorous tales to thrilling dramas from Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, and of course, South Carolina, these programs illustrate the irrepressible spirit that defines the South.
