Columbia, SC...More than thirty-five years ago, the United States Congress passed the National Cancer Act - a simple yet powerful piece of legislation that paved the way for groundbreaking cancer research.  The results of this act came in the form of new treatment and prevention options that ultimately affected the lives of millions of people around the world.

On Sundays, June 1 and 8, former CNN anchor Paula Zahn hosts a four-part mini-series entitled Waging War on Cancer.  Each powerful 60-minute program uncovers the remarkable medical strides in cancer research and treatment, and feature some of the most prominent cancer experts in the field.

Waging War on Cancer, takes viewers to the frontline to meet patients who can attest to the significant progress being made as they share their personal stories of hope and survival. From the astonishing 80 percent cure rate for childhood cancers to the phenomenal advances in treatment options for breast cancer, viewers will hear accounts from survivors who benefited from conventional and experimental therapies as well as from the scientists who have been at the forefront of the battle to conquer this disease.

Below are brief episode descriptions for the series.

Targeted Therapies, which airs Sunday, June 1 at 3:30 p.m., explores the history of the Cancer Act and takes a look at the breakthrough treatments that have emerged as a result.  Patients who have benefited from these once-experimental therapies tell their stories and scientists who have been instrumental in the search for a cure talk about the vast difference in treating cancer, before the Cancer Act, and now.Childhood Cancers, which airs Sunday, June 1 at 6 p.m., examines how, only a generation ago, researchers fought these diseases that were nearly pandemic and, in most cases, were rapidly fatal, and are now under control.  The program also takes a look at how pediatric cancer research has helped oncologists develop effective anti-cancer regimens for adults.

Breast Cancer, which airs Sunday, June 8 at 3:30 p.m., investigates the dramatic differences in treating breast cancer today compared to the way this type of cancer was treated a generation ago. Survivors reveal their experiences with this disease, sharing how they not only reacted to the diagnosis, but also to the treatments that have saved their lives.

The Future, which airs Sunday, June 8 at 6 p.m., seeks to demystify cancer by explaining where it comes from and highlights some of the innovative treatments that are helping many more patients become cancer-free. In addition, scientists discuss the importance of early detection that could give cancer patients more treatment options and a better chance for survival.
