Pavilion By the Numbers

Columbia, SC...Even though it’s been almost a year since the last ride, the last melt-in-your-mouth funnel cake, the last late-night beach parties at The Attic -- a.k.a The Magic Attic -- memories of the Pavilion at Myrtle Beach are as enticing as the era during which they were created.

So in the spirit of nostalgia, on Saturday, August 25, ETV will broadcast the Carolina Stories documentary, The Last Ride: Memories of the Myrtle Beach Pavilion (note: Carolina Stories usually airs Thursdays at 9 p.m.)  The show airs at 5 p.m.

Encore performances are scheduled for Sunday, August 26 at 2 p.m. and Thursday, August 30 at 7 p.m.

For nearly 60 years, the Pavilion was synonymous with music, rides and fun in the sun.  Like a whirling dervish, it was a heady time at the popular beachfront hangout. "Hearts have been broken here, and hearts have been mended here," says longtime Myrtle Beach resident, Tempe Oehler.  And for thousands of visitors from all over the country, the dog days of summer at this familiar stomping ground were a right of passage.

During the hour-long program, man-on-the-street conversations give viewers a glimpse back in time where teens cruised the strip and beach music ruled, providing momentum for South Carolina’s celebrated dance, The Shag.  From hanging out on the boardwalk to the thrills and chills of the Hurricane, the biggest wooden roller coaster in the Palmetto State, the "heart of Myrtle Beach" captivated a generation and shaped memories that perpetuated an age of innocence.  ETV producer Steve Folks said, "Making this documentary was like taking a sentimental journey back to a happier, less complicated time.  For me, the Pavilion meant Myrtle Beach, and Myrtle Beach meant the Pavilion."
