ETV to Broadcast Special Arts-Related Programs Throughout May
For Immediate Release
April 16, 2010
Columbia, SC…Throughout the month of May, ETV explores the diverse terrain of arts and culture with a stellar lineup of arts-related programs.
The first in the series of special programming is Your Day on the Road: Exploring the Arts. Airing on Sunday, May 2 at 1 p.m., the program takes a look at the South Carolina National Heritage Corridor Region I Art Trail. ETV spotlights the resident artists who specialize in both traditional and contemporary mediums of artistic expression in the Upstate, Anderson, Oconee and Pickens counties.
On Wednesday, May 12 at 9 p.m., ETV airs American Masters: The Doors: When You’re Strange. This 90-minute special features the rock band that helped define the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. Directed by Tom DiCillo and narrated by Johnny Depp, the documentary tells the story of one of America’s most iconic and influential rock bands using only original footage shot between their formation in 1965 and the death of their singer, Jim Morrison, in 1971. The program chronicles the creation of The Doors’ six landmark studio albums and follows the band from the corridors of UCLA’s film school, onto the stages of their electrifying sold-out performances – giving time and attention to every one of their groundbreaking, chart-topping songs.
Then on Sunday, May 16 at 1 p.m., Touch the Earth: Nature-Based Sculpture airs. The South Carolina Botanical Garden on the Clemson University campus is a pioneer in nature-based sculpture. Using twigs, grass, soil, and other nature products, artists design sculptures that speak to thousands of visitors each year. Acclaimed American poet Maya Angelou narrates an overview of the creative process as seen through the eyes of internationally-known artists, faculty members, students, and volunteers.
As part of May’s special programming, episodes of ETV Classics will focus on the performing arts. ETV Classics are programs that marked either pivotal moments or profiled key players in the Palmetto State’s history, or were landmark productions that helped establish ETV as one of the premiere public broadcasters in the nation. ETV Classics can be seen Sundays at 3 p.m. on ETV-HD unless otherwise noted. May’s lineup includes:
• May 2 – Site Specific Art: Places with A Past
• May 9 – Spoleto 1999 Part I
• May 16 – Art’s the Thing: Fools Fire
• May 23 – Art’s the Thing: Jazz At Magnolia

ETV’s month of special arts-related programming continues with Porgy & Bess Gullah Version on Monday, May 17 at 7 p.m. This legendary opera by George Gershwin depicts African-American life in a fishing village in South Carolina in the early 20th century. Bess, a woman with a disreputable past, tries to break free from her brutish lover, Crown, after he is wanted for murder. The only person willing to overlook her past and offer her shelter is the crippled Porgy. Drama ensues as their relationship is threatened by the disapproval of the townspeople, the presence of her old drug supplier, Sportin' Life, and the threatened return of Crown.
On Sunday, May 23 at 5 p.m., ETV presents Carolina Stories: Backstage Pass! This hour-long program gives viewers a glimpse inside the production process of some of the biggest shows at the Grand Strand in Myrtle Beach. From talent casting and demanding rehearsal schedules, to training medieval knights, this entertaining documentary goes behind the scenes to meet the folks who make it happen.
ETV wraps up the month of arts-related programs with The Maestro on Monday, May 31 at 7:30 p.m. This captivating program offers an in-depth look at the amazing composer and Spoleto USA Festival founder Gian Carlo Menotti.
