September 5, 2008

On Thursday, Sept. 18 at 9 p.m., ETV presents the broadcast premiere of the Carolina Stories documentary Finding Clovis. The 30-minute documentary takes a sweeping look at the haunting mystery surrounding the sudden disappearance of the ancient Clovis people, a once-flourishing tribe of hunters and skilled toolmakers who inhabited South Carolina more than 13,000 years ago.

Finding Clovis features world-renowned scientists including Al Goodyear from the University of South Carolina, Dennis Stanford from the Smithsonian Institute and geophysicist Allen West who offer insight about these significant first Americans – who they were and where they came from – and the theories surrounding their abrupt demise.

Evidence from the rural Topper archeological site in Allendale County support the often-disputed hypothesis that a giant fiery comet exploded over North America almost 13,000 years ago, sparking massive wildfires that caused the immediate annihilation of the Clovis people, plant life, and large animals such as the wooly mammoth, mastodons and saber-toothed tigers.

Airing in conjunction with South Carolina Archeological Month, Finding Clovis takes viewers on an illuminating expedition, unearthing prehistoric relics that include arrowheads, blades and other cutting tools, and offers an up-close look at the painstaking work of excavating these primitive artifacts that form the pieces of a centuries-old puzzle.
