ETV to Broadcast “I’m Not Nuts Living With Food Allergies”

For Immediate Release
April 21, 2009

Columbia, SC…In recent years the word “allergy” has become a catch-all phrase. In most instances, the term “food allergy” is misinterpreted as anything from a stomach ache to a rash, and is most often confused with a food tolerance. What many people do not understand is that food allergies are serious and can be life-threatening, just as an allergy to bee stings can be fatal.

On Sunday, May 3 at 4 p.m., ETV brings an inside look at life with allergies in I’m Not Nuts Living with Food Allergies. The program addresses the impact of this condition on daily activities for children and adults, as well as combats common misconceptions while highlighting vital information on the subject.

Through the experience of several families with members who have food allergies, this hour-long program clarifies the misinformation people commonly have about this infirmity. Most importantly, the program illustrates that food allergies are something a person can live with.

Respected medical professionals such as Dr. Scott Sicherer of the Jaffe Food Allergy Institute and noted allergists Harvey Leo and Ben Song of the Allergy & Immunology Associates of Ann Arbor, MI discuss the possible causes of food allergies and their impact on the parents, the allergic child, and siblings.

Additionally, viewers will witness the daily routine of an allergic individual. From the time and energy that goes into preparing to eat out, to going to the park, to addressing the lack of understanding and education of people who are unaware of the danger of this condition.

Various coping challenges and strategies -- medical, emotional and social -- are also examined during this broadcast, along with positive insights from people who have learned how to effectively live with food allergies on a daily basis.
