ETV Spotlights the Majesty of Brookgreen Gardens

New “Carolina Stories” Documentary “This Is Brookgreen Gardens” Airs Thursday, January 31

For Immediate Release
December 20, 2007

Columbia, SC...Amid a tranquil backdrop of fountains and foliage, art and animals, lays the splendor of Brookgreen Gardens.  On Thursday, Jan. 31 at 9 p.m., ETV’s Carolina Stories presents “This Is Brookgreen Gardens,” an engaging look at the prolific history and culture of this coastal gem.

During this hour-long broadcast, viewers will step back in time, revisiting 19th century rice plantations located south of Myrtle Beach.  Laurel Hill, Springfield, Brookgreen, and The Oaks -- the four plantations that comprise Brookgreen Gardens -- are the looking glass through which the history of this sanctuary develops.  This Is Brookgreen Gardens shows both sides of plantation life, from the wealthy landowners to the thousands of slaves from West Africa who created the rice fields.

Throughout the program, viewers will hear stories portraying significant moments that sustain the heritage of this Lowcountry jewel.  One such anecdote is that of America’s first Romantic painter, Washington Allston. Born at Brookgreen, his works were inspired by stories he was told as a young boy by the slaves.  His art would later inspire the creative genius of Ralph Waldo Emerson and Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

From stunning figurative sculptures and exquisitely landscaped gardens to dramatic moss-draped oak trees along meandering wooded trails and the impressive wildlife preserve, nature lovers will discover a breathtaking treasure trove of history, nature and art in this picturesque exploration of one of South Carolina’s most beloved landmarks.
