ETV Spotlights South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame Inductees

Columbia, SC...Long after the roar of adoring fans in the stadium grows quiet, the reward at the end of an illustrious career is the respect and recognition that comes from being named to the Hall of Fame.  On Friday, September 1 at 7 p.m., ETV honors some of the state’s top athletes through a presentation of the 2006 South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony.  The ceremony originally took place in May of this year.

The program captures the annual celebration, which recognizes the Palmetto State athletes whose illustrious careers have played out in national and international arenas.  The emcee for the induction ceremonies is Willie Jeffries, former head coach and athletic director for South Carolina State University.

The Class of 2006 inductees are:

  • Jimmy Key - Former Clemson pitcher and four-time all-star with the Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles
  • LaMarr Hoyt - Former Keenan High School (Columbia) star and pitcher for the Chicago White Sox and San Diego Padres
  • Katrina McClain - Charleston native and United States Olympic basketball team member in 1988, 1992 and 1996
  • Jim Carlen - Former USC football coach with a 45-36-1 record that is fifth best in school history in terms of winning percentage (.556)
  • Harold Green - Former USC and NFL team member who played nine seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, St. Louis Rams and Atlanta Falcons
  • Stanford Jennings - Former Furman running back and NFL star with the Cincinnati Bengals, New Orleans Saints and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
  • Donnie Walsh - Former USC assistant basketball coach and current president and CEO of the Indiana Pacers
  • Brian Ruff - Former Citadel linebacker and Southern Conference player of the year in 1975 and 1976

The following athletes were also recognized for their outstanding accomplishments:

  • Kate Niehaus – Female Amateur Athlete of the Year
  • Marcus Brisbone – Male Athlete of the Year
  • Sam Gado – Bobby Richardson Sportsman Award
  • Chris Gardocki – Professional Athlete of the Year
