ETV's "Web of Water" Receives a "My Source" Education Innovation Award

For Immediate Release
April 5, 2010

Columbia, SC... ETV recently won a "My Source" Education Innovation Award from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) in Washington, D.C. for the "Web of Water" (WOW) site on its educational portal, Knowitall.org.

While ETV was recognized by the CPB for its Web site, WOW was actually the result of a successful partnership with SC Lowcountry Environmental Education Program (LEEP) and Organic Process Productions (OPP) who brought the project to ETV and provided much of the Web site's content.

The "My Source" Education Innovation Awards recognize and showcase how public broadcasting stations use pioneering approaches and emerging digital technologies to serve the educational needs of their communities on-air, online and in the classroom.

“Stations across the country are using technology in creative and innovative ways to deliver educational tools and resources that are making a real difference to teachers, parents and children,” said Pat Harrison, president and CEO of CPB. “Public media is the definitive education partner for a new generation of learners and CPB congratulates ETV and its partners, SC LEEP and OPP, for their outstanding contributions to South Carolina.”

The "Web of Water" project, including the documentary and its companion Web site, trace a kayaking expedition from South Carolina’s mountains to the ocean. This program, which helps students to identify with local natural, cultural and historical landscapes, was provided to all schools, but with a special emphasis on Title 1 schools and groups at-risk or with special needs. It also aims to reignite children's excitement about exploring the great outdoors.

OPP produced the webisodes appearing on the site as well as the "Web of Water" documentary that aired as part of ETV's independent film series, Southern Lens.

LEEP, who co-produced the videos, extended the Web site experience by visiting classrooms and guiding fieldtrips across the state, helping students to learn through the Environment as an Integrated Context for learning (EIC) model, a proven method marked by gains in academic achievement, and improvement in teacher practices.

In addition to hosting the Web site and airing the documentary, ETV pulled together the support resources, including state curriculum standards correlations, lesson plans and activities, maps, photos and more. To visit the site and watch the full documentary, click here.
