ETV Profiles the 2007 Teacher of the Year Candidates on April 29

Columbia, SC...Just days before the May 4 banquet announcing the 2007 Teacher of the Year, ETV will highlight each of the candidates, allowing South Carolinians to meet these exceptional women, and get a first-hand look at the ways they are making a difference in the lives of their students.
"In Our Schools: Teacher of the Year 2007," which airs Sunday, April 29 at 6 p.m., takes viewers inside the candidates' classrooms, highlighting the teaching styles and techniques they have found to be so successful, and providing insights into the challenges and rewards of being a teacher.
This year's candidates are:
- Linda Dowling, a 6th-8th grade language-arts teacher at Sonovista School in Darlington County School District
- Ann Marie Taylor, a K-5 special education teacher at Pine Tree Hill Elementary School in Kershaw County School District
- Ilona Lawless Sunday, an 8th grade science teacher at Crayton Middle School in Richland County School District One
- Dawn Smith, a 4th grade teacher at Bookman Road Elementary School in Richland County School District Two
- Frances L. Hardy, a 10th-12th grade language arts teacher at Spartanburg High School in Spartanburg School District Seven
The Teacher of the Year will participate in a one-year residency program at the Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention and Advancement in Rock Hill, and serve as a statewide ambassador for the teaching profession. She will also receive a $25,000 cash reward, a Dell laptop computer and a 2007 BMW Z-4 roadster to use for a year. Finally, she will represent the 50,000 South Carolina teachers in the National Teacher of the Year Program. A South Carolina teacher has been chosen for this high honor two other times:
- Martha Stringfellow from Lewisville Elementary in Chester County in 1971
- Therese Knecht Dozier of Irmo High School, in Lexington County in 1985
In Our Schools is a joint production between ETV and the South Carolina Department of Education. The special series focuses on effective educational initiatives in our schools.
