ETV Presents the Sounds of the Season in December

Local Productions Compliment Eclectic Mix of Holiday Programming Beginning Sunday, Dec. 17

Columbia, SC...In December, ETV brings viewers a diverse array of holiday programs for the entire family starting Sunday, Dec. 17 at 6 p.m.  The Charlotte Philharmonic: Christmas Wonderland.  Under the direction of Maestro Albert E. Moehring, Christmas Wonderland features the Charlotte Philharmonic Community Chorus, Charlotte City Ballet, Eddie Mabry Dancers and the Holiday Singers.

Then on Wednesday, Dec. 20 at 8 p.m., viewers can enjoy Christmas with The Mormon Tabernacle Choir with Renee Fleming.  This traditional holiday concert features opera virtuoso and two-time Grammy Award-winner Renee Fleming and acclaimed British actress Claire Bloom.  Popular favorites sung with the choir include “Angels From the Realms of Glory,” “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” and “Joy to the World.”  Immediately following at 9 p.m. is Great Performances: Renee Fleming: Sacred Songs and Carols.  Performed at Germany’s historic Mainz Cathedral, Fleming performs an exquisite selection of sacred Christmas music.  Concert repertoire includes selections from Handel’s “Messiah,” Berlioz’s “L’Enfance du Christ,” Mozart’s “Mass in C Minor,” and Leonard Bernstein’s “Mass.”

ETV’s celebration of the season continues with the nationally acclaimed College of Charleston Madrigal Singers.  On Thursday, Dec. 21 at 7 p.m., Robert Taylor, program director and associate professor of music at the college brings an impressive presentation of Renaissance comical skits and powerful vocal performances in Madrigal Singers Present: A Yuletide Evening.

On Saturday, Dec. 23 starting at 7 p.m., the Boston Pops Orchestra presents Pops Holiday Party.  This musical treat features festive holiday selections culled from more than 35 years of programming.  Included are clips from legendary favorites like Arthur Fiedler and John Williams, as well as new selections from current Boston Pops conductor Keith Lockhart.

More festive holiday programming is slated for Sunday, Dec. 24.  St. Olaf Christmas in Norway is a Scandinavian musical special commemorating the 100th anniversary of Norway’s independence from Sweden and the cultural roots of the St. Olaf College choir. The program airs at 10 p.m. and features the choir of St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, a girls’ choir from Norway and Norwegian mezzo Randi Stene. 

Then on Monday, Dec. 25, ETV’s wraps up its special seasonal broadcasts with a full day of yuletide fare beginning at 9 a.m.  Below is a listing of the shows:

  • 9 a.m – Arthur’s Perfect Christmas
  • 10 a.m. – Mr. Christmas
  • 11 a.m. – L.A. County Holiday Celebration
  • 12 p.m. – Christmas at Belmont
  • 1 p.m. – Christmas with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir featuring Renee Fleming and Claire Bloom
  • 2 p.m. – Great Performances: Renee Fleming: Sacred Songs and Carols
  • 3 p.m. – Charlotte Philharmonic: Christmas Wonderland
  • 4 p.m. – Governor’s Carolighting 2006
  • 5 p.m. – Holiday Party with the Pops
