Columbia, SC...On Tuesday, August 28, ETV presents “Rockabilly Legends: They Called It Rock ‘n’ Roll Long Before They Called It Rock ‘n’ Roll.” Complementing the broadcast, Jerry Naylor, former lead singer of the Crickets, will give a LIVE, closed-studio performance at ETV on the same night. This story of the rockabilly legends, as told through archival interviews with rock ‘n’ roll pioneers Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis and others, airs at 7 p.m.
Hosted by game show icon Wink Martindale, this hour-long program is as much about the personalities that shaped rockabilly as it is about their extraordinary contributions to the musical landscape at that time. By combining elements of country, bop, hillbilly, gospel and bluegrass, these inspired musicians forever changed the world of music.
Throughout the program, viewers hear first-hand recollections of the journey from the cotton fields and country churches of the rural South to the honky-tonks and recording studios of the big city where their musical style gave birth to rock ‘n’ roll.
Vintage footage from the 1950s brings energy to the production with timeless performances of rock ‘n’ roll favorites such as:
- “Hound Dog” by Elvis Presley
- “Matchbox,” “Honey Don’t” and “Blue Suede Shoes” by Carl Perkins
- “Big River,” and “Folsom Prison Blues” by Johnny Cash
- “Ooby Dooby” by Roy Orbison
- “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Going On” and “Great Balls of Fire” by Jerry Lee Lewis
- “Party Doll” by Buddy Knox
- “Peggy Sue” and “Oh Boy” by Buddy Holly and the Crickets
- “Lonesome Train” from the Johnny Burnette Trio
Also featured are interviews with John Carter Cash (son of Johnny and June Carter Cash), Charlie Daniels, Paul McCartney, Bill Mack (XM Radio host), George Hunt, Billy Burnette (formerly of Fleetwood Mac) and Michael Knox.
