ETV Presents Rick Steves’ European Christmas

The Great Holiday Escape Begins Sunday, Dec. 2 at 5:30 p.m.

Columbia, SC...On Sunday, Dec. 2 at 5:30 p.m., ETV will air Rick Steves’ European Christmas. This cinematic field trip gives viewers a glimpse of a traditional European Christmas: from flaming puddings and minced pies in jolly old England to angelic girls choirs donning flickering crowns of candles in Oslo, Norway.

European Christmas is a rich potpourri of Christian and pre-Christian traditions such as, yule logs and mistletoe, fondue and shepherds’ bonfires, monastic chants and a Christmas yodel.  The program also invites viewers to celebrate the season through the eyes of a delighted child, an awe-struck pilgrim and a loving parent. Tuscan peasants, trendy Norwegians, Victorian English and dirndl-clad Tyroleans all contribute to the uniqueness of the show.

Each scene in this 90-minute overseas visit is filled with inspiring sounds of traditional European holiday music performed by families and choirs in their homes, chapels and cathedrals. In England, spirits soar as choral groups sing like angels and conductors perform centuries-old carols in acoustically perfect churches. Included in this leg of the journey is the little village of Swainswick, where children belt out a joyful song of a donkey that took Mary to Bethlehem. Up north in Norway, the ethereal voices of the Norwegian Girls Choir celebrate the return of the sun.
