ETV Presents Carmina Burana

Lyrical Drama Airs Sunday, Dec. 24 at 7 p.m.

For Immediate Release
December 15, 2006

Columbia, SC…On Sunday, Dec. 24 at 7 p.m., ETV presents the statewide broadcast of Carmina Burana.  This scenic cantata is based on 24 of the poems found in the medieval collection Carmina Burana.  The program, taped last March, is a collaborative venture between Converse College, the Spartanburg Music Foundation, Spartanburg Festival Chorus, and Ballet Spartanburg.

Originally intended as a staged work, Carmina Burana is typically performed in concert halls around the world.  “We have been waiting to do this piece, because it was written with the stage and dancing in mind,” said Sarah Ioannides, music director and conductor of the Spartanburg Philharmonic Orchestra.  “We are going to do the piece in our own way.”

The performance aired earlier this season on November 18.

South Carolina ETV is the state's public educational broadcasting network with 11 television and eight radio transmitters, and a multi-media educational system in more than 2,500 schools, colleges, businesses and government agencies. Using television, radio and the web, SCETV's mission is to enrich lives by educating children, informing and connecting citizens, celebrating our culture and environment and instilling the joy of learning.
