ETV Plays Host to Teachers From Over Half of SC School Districts for FREE Three-Day Technology Workshop

Sessions Held July 29-31

For Immediate Release
July 21, 2008

Columbia, SC...Over 280 educators will converge on ETV’s Columbia-based headquarters from July 29-31 for an intensive three days of free training on educational technology tools. Representing 52 of the Palmetto State’s 85 school districts, and 189 institutions of learning--including public and private schools, district instructional technology offices, colleges and universities, and more--attendees will be learning everything from creating their own podcasts and videos, to using powerful tools such as Google Earth, SMART Boards and various Web 2.0 technology.

Scheduled just prior to the beginning of the 2008-09 school year, the hands-on workshops, which teachers can cherry pick, will equip teachers with new skills that they can immediately put to use in their classrooms.

“Teachers are charged with the responsibility of reaching all students in their classroom, and technology is a key factor in accomplishing this goal. Our workshops provide valuable training to teachers to assist in motivating students to reach their potential,” said Dianne Gregory, technology education instructor for ITV Professional Development and ETV’s StreamlineSC.

Seventy-two classes will offer 24 different topics over the three-day period, providing not only a wide range of topics, but an array of experience levels as well. Sessions from “A Picture is Worth A 1000 Words” to "iPod-abilities 2.0," have all been designed to allow teachers to jump in at their ability-level and learn innovative ways to connect with their students.

What began three years ago as a workshop on how to use ETV’s StreamlineSC, an Internet-based video-on-demand service, has now become so popular that it consistently "sells out." This time, the workshop was full after just a week. “We usually open registration at 11 p.m., and within an hour teachers from around the state are already signing up! It’s like waiting in line to get concert tickets,” said an enthusiastic Debbie Jarrett, who helps coordinate ETV's technology workshops.

This is the sixth workshop hosted by ETV, which provides the free training as part of its mission to create new, inventive ways to improve learning in classrooms across South Carolina.
