ETV Hosts the South Carolina State Finals for the National Geographic Bee

Friday, March 31 at ETV.

For Immediate Release

Columbia, SC... Pop Quiz:  Lake Gatún, an artificial lake that constitutes part of the Panama Canal system, was created by damming what river? *

Questions such as these will be posed to 100 fourth-to-eighth-grade students from schools all across the state as they match wits against each other to become the one and only South Carolina state champion in the National Geographic Bee.

This talented group of 100 individual school winners will converge on the ETV Telecommunications Center in Columbia on Friday, March 31 to vie for this coveted spot.  The victor will then be sent on an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C. for the national championship on May 23 and 24. Additionally, the state winner will also receive $100 and a National Geographic globe.

The state competition will start to heat up shortly after 9 a.m., as students are divided into five different groups and hold mini-competitions, which will narrow the field to the 10 best.

These top students will then come together in ETV’s Murray Studio for the final showdown to determine who will advance to Washington for their shot at the national title and the grand prize: $25,000 college scholarship and lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society.

Historically, the final round has begun sometime between 10:30 and 11:30 a.m. and a winner decided by approximately 1 p.m.

ETV is one of less than a handful of public television stations nationwide to tape and air the state championship round, which can be seen on Sunday, May 14 at 4 p.m.   ETV will also air the national competition on Thursday, May 25 at 11 a.m.
