ETV Conjures a Ghoulish Evening of Ghosts and Legends This Halloween
For Immediate Release
October 23, 2009
Columbia, SC…As fitting as candy corn, jack o’ lanterns, and little children dressed as ballerinas and Batman is, nothing says Halloween like a good, old-fashioned bloodcurdling tale of things that go bump in the night.
In the days leading up to Halloween, ETV takes viewers “trick or treating” across the state with hair-raising tales that will mesmerize listeners of all ages, including:
• A popular bed and breakfast in Union haunted by a motley gaggle of ghosts (and their dog)
• A Charleston restaurant with it’s notorious spinster ghost, Zoe St. Amand, who appears to patrons, apparently lonely from the death of her soulmate sister, Elizabeth
• A college bell tower in Newberry, said to be the place from which a distraught young woman fell to her death believing her fiancé had abandoned her when in actuality, he died in the Civil War
On Thursday, Oct. 29 at 9 p.m., ETV premieres the new Carolina Stories: Ghosts and Legends of South Carolina II. Hosted by Gullah storyteller Aunt Pearlie Sue, this 30-minute program takes a spine-tingling look at more of the Palmetto State’s bizarre phantoms and lore.
Sites featured in the documentary include:
• Stumphouse Tunnel - Walhalla
• Battery Carriage House Inn – Charleston
• Poogan’s Porch Restaurant – Charleston
• Merridun Inn – Union
• Hunters Store – Pendleton
• Old Stone Church – Clemson
• Newberry College Bell Tower – Newberry
• The Bride of West End – Newberry
Then at 9:30 p.m., ETV broadcasts the original Ghosts and Legends of South Carolina. This half-hour program takes a chilling look at the infamous Lizard Man of Lee County, the Phantom of the Abbeville Opera House, and Edgefield’s dastardly Becky Cotton.
Wrapping up the evening of eerie accounts is the Southern Lens documentary, Dracula: Forbidden Fruit. Airing at 10 p.m., this documentary is a behind-the-scenes look at the haunting Trident Technical College play that not only captivated audiences but also benefited the Clemente Project. This initiative provides life-changing opportunities to impoverished people by offering two free college-level humanities courses to, in the course of time, break the cycle of poverty.
South Carolina ETV is the state's public educational broadcasting network with 11 television and eight radio transmitters, and a multi-media educational system in more than 2,500 schools, colleges, businesses and government agencies. Using television, radio and the web, SCETV's mission is to enrich lives by educating children, informing and connecting citizens, celebrating our culture and environment and instilling the joy of learning.
