Time-Honored Tradition Returns to ETV Sunday, April 6 at 6:30 p.m.
For Immediate Release
March 14, 2008
Columbia, SC...Lightening fast thoroughbred horses and the perfectly manicured emerald lawn of the prestigious Springdale Race Course provide an irresistible backdrop for the 76th running of the Carolina First Carolina Cup. The race, which will be taped in historic Camden on Saturday, March 29, is enjoyed by thousands of fans each year. On Sunday, April 6 at 6:30 p.m., thousands more will watch the competition from the comfort of home as ETV and ETV's South Carolina Channel bring statewide coverage of the Palmetto State’s favorite “rites of spring.”
More than just a thrilling race, this hour-long show will introduce viewers to champion horse trainer Janet Elliot who was the first female to be named Trainer of the Year by the National Steeplechase Association. The program also takes viewers onto the track itself, exploring the types of hurdles steeplechase horses have to jump -- two of which are more than four feet high. And finally, race enthusiasts will learn the fascinating history behind the Carolina Cup trophy, which was crafted in 1704 and was almost lost to history in a scrap silver sale before being restored to glory in 1930 as the race trophy.
Surviving innumerable fashion trends, mouth-watering tailgate menus and cocktail concoctions, the Carolina Cup remains one of South Carolina's largest sporting and social events.
An encore presentation will air on all ETV stations on Sunday, April 6 at midnight. ETV's South Carolina Channel will rebroadcast the race on Sunday, April 6 at 8 p.m. and again on Tuesday, April 8 at 10 p.m.
