ETV and the State Department of Education Write the Next Chapter for School Contest

The Winner of "Design by the Book: Chapter 2" Will Be Decided on April 6

For Immediate Release
April 4, 2006

Columbia, SC...Look out, Donald Trump! Move over, Ty Pennington! ETV and the South Carolina State Department of Education (SDE) have once again challenged schools throughout the Palmetto State to a competition that provides them with the chance to compete for an “Extreme Makeover” of their school library.

From the over 60 entries that poured into the SDE in late 2005, three schools were selected to advance to the next level of the “Design By the Book” competition.  This second installment, aptly titled “Design By the Book: Chapter 2,” takes place on Thursday, April 6 at 9 a.m. at the ETV studios in Columbia.  Those three schools are:

Lake View Elementary/Middle School in Lake View (Dillon School District 1)

R.H. Rollings Middle School of the Arts in Summerville (Dorchester School District 2)

Whittaker Elementary School in Orangeburg (Orangeburg Consolidated School District 5)

Adding to the excitement of the contest, the final winner will be decided through a take-off of the popular program, “The Apprentice.”  The principal, librarian and one student from each school will meet in the “boardroom” with three individuals who will portray Donald Trump and his trusted associates Carolyn Kepcher and George Ross.  The three teams will be given a series of five tasks that they must complete on the spot with no advance notice. By the end of the day, one school will rise above the others and be granted the grand prize.

Then on Tuesday, June 13, the makeover team and an ETV television crew will descend upon the winning school.  Over the next 48 hours the library will be transformed using one of three themes chosen in advance by the principal:  coastal, movie set or farm.

The first “Design By the Book” contest renovated Reuben Elementary School in Newberry in 2004, with over $7000 in upgrades, including $3000 in new books.  The program was also recognized by American Library Association with a Certificate of Commendation.
