Columbia, SC… For the fourth time in as many years, PBS' national series "The History Detectives" has found a mystery to solve in South Carolina. And this one might just redraw the maps of the Civil War.

On Monday, Sept. 7 at 9 p.m., one of the episode's three stories brings History Detective Elyse Luray to the Palmetto State to examine evidence submitted by David Brinkman, of Columbia.

Clearing some newly purchased property along the Broad River, Brinkman discovered evidence of an old bridge abutment. Upon further investigation, he believes he may have found the location where Confederates burned the bridge to thwart General Sherman’s attempt to cross into Columbia to continue his scorch-and-burn campaign.

If Brinkman is right, the historical marker on the Broad River Bridge is incorrect--Sherman’s army crossed the river upstream, not downstream as the marker indicates.

To solve the mystery, Luray visits Joe Long, curator of education at the S.C. Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum, Patrick McCawley, supervisor of archival processing at the S.C. Department of Archives and History, and a visit with SC State Archaeologist Jonathan Leader.

Yes, in this episode, Luray is able to pinpoint the exact spot where Sherman staged his troops before crossing the Broad River, but does it prove Brinkman right?

Tune into "History Detectives" on ETV to find out.
