Columbia, SC...Andrew Brill, 14, a home-schooled eighth-grader from Anderson, took first place Friday in a statewide contest held to choose the winner of the S.C. National Geographic Bee. Andrew qualified for the contest through the Classical Conversations Home School Association in Easley.

The event took place at ETV studios in Columbia and the final round of competition will air on ETV on Sunday, May 14 at 4 p.m.

Andrew won when he responded to the question, “Seventy percent unemployment and severe fuel shortages have virtually paralyzed economic activity in what country east of Botswana?” by correctly answering, “Zimbabwe.” For his efforts he was rewarded with a check for $100, a National Geographic globe, a plaque for himself and one for his school, and an all-expenses paid trip for him and a guest to Washington, D.C. to participate in the national finals.

The national finals will air on ETV on Thursday, May 25 at 11 a.m.

In order to win the competition, Andrew was the last person left standing in a field of 100 contestants—from fourth through eighth-grades—drawn from throughout the state.

The first runner-up was Zhehao “Howie” Mao, 14, an eighth-grader from Thomas C. Cario Middle School in Mt. Pleasant. Nathaniel Foutch, 13, an eighth-grader from Kennedy Middle School in Aiken, took second runner-up honors. Howie and Nathaniel each won a National Geographic globe, a personal plaque and a plaque each for their schools, in addition to $75 and $50, respectively.
