Columbia, SC... Dr. Daniel G. Amen, award-winning psychiatrist, brain-imaging researcher and best-selling author, will make his only South Carolina appearance at ETV’s Columbia studios for a special "Creating Brain Healthy Families" workshop. The two-hour seminar will be held at 1041 George Rogers Blvd. on Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 6:30 p.m.

“In this program I will give you 10 very simple “brain based” steps that will help you live longer, look younger, be thinner, and decrease your risk for depression, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, heart disease, cancer and stroke,” Amen said when describing the workshop.

Amen’s 10 steps include:

  1. Boost Your Brain to Lose Your Belly
  2. Know Your Motivation
  3. Know Your Brain Type
  4. Use Brain Specific Supplements to Boost Your Body
  5. Balance Your Blood Sugar to Control Your Cravings
  6. Eat Right to Think Right
  7. Know Your Numbers
  8. Incorporate Hypnosis as a Powerful Tool, Especially in the Context of a Great Plan
  9. Stop Believing Every Stupid Thought That Goes Through Your Head
  10. Do Not Let Other People Make You Fat and Steal Your Health.

To illustrate his points, Amen will use Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) scans, which study blood flow and activity patterns in the human brain--and their effects on a person's mental health. The images can bring to light why those who have suffered head trauma may also experience mood swings or depression, or why Alzheimer's patients have so much difficulty with their memory. They can also reveal what steps we can take to heal the damage that’s been done to our brain and work towards preventing, or at least minimizing, future harm and disease.

By showing before and after SPECT scans, Amen shows how following these 10 steps can have dramatic impact on not only our own lives, but those of our partners and children.

To reserve two tickets to attend the "Creating Brain Healthy Families" workshop, call 800-256-8535 and become a member of the ETV Endowment at the $150 level.

Amen has appeared on the Today Show, the Early Show and CNN and his work has been featured in a variety of renowned publications ranging from NY Times to Newsweek to the Wall Street Journal. In his recnt PBS Special, "Magnificent Mind At Any Age," Amen discusses natural ways to gain control of the health issues, diseases, and injuries which most of us will either face or watch a loved one live with. While Amen isn’t opposed to medication, he recommends starting with natural supplements, such as St. John’s Wort for depression and ginkgo and sage for memory, changing the diet and exercise habits of his patients, and then trying prescription drugs if these methods don’t work.

And in his upcoming PBS Special, "The Brain in Love," which is scheduled to air this fall on ETV, Amen will explore common problems found in relationships and how acknowledging the brain’s chemistry can make us better spouses and partners.
