Columbia SC...Some think of it as a forgotten war, some see it as instrumental in laying the groundwork for the Civil Rights and Women's movements that would come decades later. Still others say that in addition to the millions of lives lost in battle, it played a vital role in spreading a worldwide influenza epidemic that killed millions.
It is World War I.
And now, on Thursday, Oct. 18 at 9 p.m., 90 years after America joined in a conflict already raging around the world, ETV's award-winning "Carolina Stories" series will feature "Over Here," a sweeping look at the war's little-talked-about, yet major, ramifications upon South Carolinians and the nation.
Noted historians from Dr. Walter Edgar to USC's Professor of Political Science Blease Graham, to Dr. Bobby Donaldson, assistant professor of History and African Studies at USC, to Upstate historian and Furman Professor Emeritus Judith Bainbridge, weigh-in on the lasting effects of the war upon our state.
Graham points to the war as the moment that turned "South Carolina, maybe for the first time in generations, towards the outside." Still others in the documentary zero-in on the heroic deeds of the 371st infantry, an all-black unit of soldiers viewed by some at the time as "a dangerous experiment."
"Over Here" is ETV's contribution to the Forward Together: South Carolina in World War I Project, a consortium of many of South Carolina's most prestigious museums and organizations-the SC State Museum, the McKissick Museum, the South Caroliniana Library, the Historic Columbia Foundation and the SC Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum-that have joined together to offer exhibitions designed to focus on the participation of South Carolina during World War I and its after effects on the state.
