Johnny Carson was seen by more people on more occasions than anyone else in American history. Over the course of 30 years, 4,531 episodes and 23,000 guests, he became a fixture of national life. Two-time Emmy®-winning filmmaker Peter Jones explores his life, career, complexities, and contradictions in the documentary American Masters Johnny Carson: King of Late Night, airing December 5 from 7:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. on SCETV.

At his peak, Carson commanded a nightly audience of 15 million viewers – double the current audience of Leno and Letterman combined. Carson chose to remain a very private man whose public persona made him an American superstar. He once revealed, “I can get in front of an audience and be in control. I suppose it’s manipulation. Offstage, I’m aloof because I’m not very comfortable.” American Masters Johnny Carson: King of Late Night explores this dichotomy and enigma, unearthing clues about Carson’s childhood, early days in the business, and personal and professional life.

Narrated by two-time Oscar®-winner Kevin Spacey, Johnny Carson: King of Late Night features more than 40 original interviews, including David Letterman, Jay Leno, Conan O'Brien, Jerry Seinfeld, Ray Romano, Drew Carey, Garry Shandling, Steve Martin, Jimmy Fallon, Ellen DeGeneres, Arsenio Hall, Mel Brooks, Dick Cavett, Carl Reiner, Don Rickles, Bob Newhart, Angie Dickinson, Joan Rivers, Doc Severinsen and other members of The Tonight Show staff.

Bette Jamison and P.A. Bennett will be on camera during live membership campaign breaks throughout the program, informing viewers on how to make a pledge of support to the SCETV Endowment.  Those who make a pledge at the $100 level can select a DVD copy of American Masters Johnny Carson: King of Late Night as a thank you gift.  All pledges made to the SCETV Endowment during this membership campaign will go towards purchasing and producing programs on SCETV.
