Dear Viewers and Listeners:

This spring ETV is proud to be shining a bright light on the music of Charleston.

In a recent half-hour program, ETV’s Mark Quinn and The Big Picture told the little-known story of Charleston jazz—a story about the roots of jazz in the Lowcountry. What caught my eye was the rich blend of jazz and big band sounds of the Charleston Jazz Orchestra that is drawing capacity crowds at the Charleston Music Hall. Using ETV’s vast archives, the program also looks at the possible origins of the “Charleston” dance craze of the 1920s. It’s a fascinating story you can find at scetv.org/thebigpicture.

And now, ETV Radio focuses on Charleston’s world-class Spoleto Festival USA. For more than 30 years, ETV Radio has produced programming covering the Festival including broadcasts of the Spoleto Chamber Music Concertsand Spoleto Today, a daily roundup of Festival events.

Recorded in the historic, recently refurbished Dock Street Theatre, Chamber Music Concerts air weekdays on our classical stations during the Festival. Public radio personality Lisa Simeone is the host of the 13 nationally syndicated one-hour concerts. This year’s broadcast marks the inaugural season of Spoleto’s charming new chamber music boss—violinist Geoff Nuttall. In addition, throughout the year, select performances from the Chamber Music Series from Spoleto Festival USA are broadcast on American Public Media’s Performance Today, a program heard by more than 1.2 million listeners each week around the country. The host of Performance Today, Fred Child, took part in this year’s opening ceremonies in May and conducts a stage talk with Osvaldo Golijov, the Chamber Music series’ composer-in-residence for 2011.

Spoleto Today is an hour-long weekday program airing regionally that features interviews, highlights and commentary from Spoleto, considered one of the world’s most comprehensive arts festivals. Tune in at 9:00 a.m. to find out what is hot in Charleston with beloved host Marcus Overton, performing arts professional for more than 30 years and the former general manager of Spoleto Festival USA.

And you can keep up with all of this at ETVRadio.org. Join us for a music-filled month from Charleston!
