<title>Guardian ad Litem &#45; A Program Advocating for Children</title>
<itunes:summary>The South Carolina Guardian ad Litem program is state&#45;funded and is part of the Governor&#39;s Office. Operating in 45 counties within the state&amp;rsquo;s 16 judicial circuits.&amp;nbsp;A&amp;nbsp;volunteer finds out what the children need. They learn about their families, their school progress, and&amp;nbsp;other special needs. The&amp;nbsp;volunteer works with all agencies involved with the child, including the Department of Social Services, the Family Court, school personnel and counselors to help the child through this process. On this week&#39;s podcast, Guardian ad Litem officials and a volunteer discuss their roles with the program and encourage those people who have potential to change a child&#39;s life to consider volunteering or becoming otherwise involved.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>The best way to expand one&#39;s horizions while beating the summer heat is to read, read, read, and Reading is what this week&#39;s podcast is all about. We&#39;ll be joined on the show by Curtis Rogers, Director of Communications with the South Carolina State Library and he&#39;ll give us timely information about summer reading programs at community libraries throughout the state. We&#39;ll also meet two of the three state winners in the Letters About Literature competition, a national program in which over 1100 South Carolina fourth through twelfth graders participated. These students wrote a personal letter to an author,  living or dead, from any genre&#45;&#45;fiction, nonfiction, or poetry,  contemporary or classic&#45;&#45;explaining how that author&#39;s work changed the  student&#39;s way of thinking about the world or themselves. Cash prizes were awarded to winning entries.
