<title>Wofford Language Academy, A Blue Ribbon School Nominee and Science P.L.U.S for Teachers</title>
<itunes:summary>This week&#39;s podcast opens with an interesting conversation featuring the Director of the Language Academy at Wofford, a program for pre&#45;college students focusing on immersion and cross&#45;cultural education scheduled for the summer of 2012. There are two&#45; and four&#45;week programs for rising 8th through 12th graders in French, German and Spanish, and a four week program in Chinese to be held in June and July. We&#39;ll be celebrating the Blue Ribbon School nomination of the Marrington Middle School of the Arts in The Berkeley County School District and learn about how this school&#39;s achievements played a role in their receiving this national distinction. And we don&#39;t want teachers in grades 3 &#45; 8 who might be interested in this summer&#39;s Science P.L.U.S Institute to miss out on getting their application in for this popular institute, so we&#39;ll review its program and the application process. We think you&#39;ll find this week&#39;s Speaking of Schools to be most informative!</itunes:summary>

Part of the discussion this week centers around House Bill 3241, often referred to as &quot;the charter school bill.&quot; The bill, if passed would support the students of public charter schools in several ways, most importantly by allowing the S.C. Public Charter School District to receive some local school tax money.</itunes:summary>

In 2010, as in the past, hyperlinks to the survey forms were e&#45;mailed to all of the state&amp;rsquo;s schools that offer single&#45;gender classes. All teachers of single&#45;gender classes were asked to complete the survey. They were also asked to encourage their students as well as the parents to complete the appropriate survey forms. These forms were available online for six weeks, and over 7,000 respondents provided some very interesting information. For nearly twenty years, the Science PLUS (Participatory Learning, Sharing, Understanding) Institute held each summer at Roper Mountain Science Center in Greenville offers teachers in grades 3 &#45; 8 choices in expanding their knowledge and lessons in areas of life, space, human body and physical sciences. The six different one&#45;week courses offer participants free classroom materials to duplicate the lessons learned during their week&amp;rsquo;s study and there is no application fee for the program. Housing is provided free for teachers who live more than an hour&amp;rsquo;s drive away and have no other housing options.&amp;nbsp;Lunch is also provided for participants three days a week. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Education will also be explored on the podcast. The Clemson University program brings together advocates from business/industry, education, government and community organizations to catalyze action through five domains that have been identified as key paths to improving STEM education.</description>

The band members practiced and performed at McAlister Auditorium on the Furman campus and chorus participants did the same at Winthrop; both events were held in March 2009 and sponsored by the South Carolina Music Educators Association. <itunes:summary>On the podcast several weeks ago we enjoyed an extended and informative conversation about South Carolina&#39;s Teacher Cadet program, operating out of the Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention and Advancement (CERRA) at Winthrop University.
