Switchgrass is being introduced to Pee Dee farmers as a potentially profitable and sustainable crop in support of biofuel production. Biofuels are derived from biomass, a renewable energy source based on organic materials such as plant matter, wood, and agricultural crops. Corn and soybeans are sources of biofuel, but perennial warm-season grasses such as switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) require less maintenance in the form of water, fertilizer, and pesticides.
