Trish DeHond - Clemson Extension Agent
Personal Hobbies: Gardening, knitting, kayaking, exploring the outdoors, geocaching, treasure hunting, botanizing (looking for wildflowers and plants)
First Memories of Gardening: When I was a little kid in upstate N.Y., I had a small strip of a garden along the side of our family’s garage where I planted flowers and my brother ran over them with the lawn mower.
Favorite Plants: Birch trees, sunflowers, anything with purple or variegated foliage, ferns and mosses
Plants I Like to Grow: Anything that I can grow from cuttings or seeds myself
My Least Favorite Thing to Do in the Garden: I just can’t bring myself to pull up and throw away a plant that didn’t make it – it has to be completely dead for me to actually rip it out, or my husband has to do it while I am not looking!
Things that Interest Me in Horticulture: Pruning, propagating plants from stem cuttings (“sticking cuttings”), odd and unusual plants, and “pass-along” plants (sharing plants with others)
Biggest Mistakes in My Garden: When I moved to South Carolina, I thought that if I left the fire ants alone, they would leave me alone, too. Big mistake! Learned the hard way – ouch!
People Who Inspire Me to Garden or Have Inspired Me: My parents (Carol & Barry DeHond), Sallie McCauley, Debbie Hayes, Tony Melton, Amanda McNulty, and all my garden club ladies and Master Gardeners.
