Jackie Moore - S.C. Department of Agriculture
Jackie Moore with the S.C. Department of Agriculture will be with us at the Making it Grow! Special at The Sumter Opera House on August 28, 2012. Here is some information from Jackie that you may not have known:
I grew up in the rolling hills of Southeastern Pennsylvania where my parents instilled in me the love of anything growing. My mom nurtured a home full of houseplants, and my father taught me how to grow a bountiful garden and to care for the trees, shrubs and grass surrounding our home. I graduated from Purdue University (the land-grant college in Indiana) with a degree in Agriculture and a major in Horticulture. Five-and-a-half years ago, I started ‘my dream job’ as a marketing specialist with the South Carolina Department of Agriculture. I am the coordinator for the six Plant and Flower Festivals the SCDA hosts around the state. I am the event coordinator for the New State Farmers Market in West Columbia. I am also the executive director of the South Carolina Specialty Food Association. I have the pleasure of introducing members of the SCSFA to the Making it Grow! viewers each month.
My love of Horticulture is evident in my home that is full of houseplants, the constantly evolving landscaping around my home and a vegetable garden, which I recently turned into a wildlife habitat due to my busy traveling schedule. Without my garden, I am able to support our local farmers buying my vegetables at farmers markets around the state. My retired racing greyhound, Maggie Mae, enjoys our visits to the farmers markets as well. When I am not travelling, my other hobbies center on relaxing at home as much as possible. I love to read, knit and putting together Jigsaw puzzles, usually as enjoying God’s creations, from my screened-in back porch. I enjoy watching all the birds that visit my seed and sugar-water feeders.
