The 25th Annual Black History Teleconference

The 25th Annual Black History Teleconference

ETV annually partners with Benedict College to offer the Black History Teleconference, now in its 25th year. The teleconference will be held live on the campus of Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina on Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at 1:30 p.m.

This year's theme, The Struggle Continues: Black Women In American Culture And History, features five high school students and one Benedict student who direct questions to six prominent African Americans about their ideas, challenges, and achievements in relation to the national theme that comes from the Association for the Study of African American Life and History in Washington, D.C. The program airs in South Carolina on ETV on February 19, 2012 at 5:00 p.m. It will be offered to school districts, colleges, universities, and public television stations nationwide and to 117 foreign countries through the satellite. The program is also available on-demand WORLDWIDE (all foreign countries) via the Internet beginning February 24, 2012.

The program was developed by executive producer Dr. Marianna White Davis, special assistant to Dr. David H. Swinton, president of Benedict College. Dr. Davis is an English teacher, lecturer, researcher, and writer. Dr. William "Sonny" Walker of Atlanta, Georgia is the moderator. Co-sponsoring this year's program are ETV, Benedict College, Colgate-Palmolive Company, Second Calvary Baptist Church of Columbia, and the Althea Gibson Tennis Club. (Gibson, a native of South Carolina, was an international professional tennis star.) High school students participating are from A.C. Flora High School, C.A. Johnson High School, Lower Richland High School, Richland Northeast High School, and W.J. Keenan High School.

Guest panelists invited, but not confirmed as of this writing, are Mrs. Leona Barr Davenport, Director, Atlanta Business League, Inc.; Dr. Keith Gilyard, International President of the National Council of Teachers of English, Urbana, Illinois; The Honorable Kamala Harris, Attorney General of the State of California, Sacramento, California; Dr.Ingrid Saunders Jones, Senior Vice President, The Coca-Cola Company; Mr. Robert L. Reed, former lineman, the National Football League and a former corporate vice president, Saratoga Springs, New York; Mrs. Lavada Watson, Senior Vice President,Colgate-Palmolive Company, New York.
