SCETV Teacher Recertification Courses—There’s Still Time! Register for Short Session Through May 20
Short Session (4 Weeks): May 20 through June 17, 2013 (Registration Open May 6 - May 20)
Summer Session (8 Weeks): July 10 through September 4, 2013 (Registration Open June 19 - July 3)
Due to recent restructuring at the SC Department of Education (SCDE) that included the merger of eMedia with SCDE Office of Virtual Education, the ITV/eMedia Teacher Recertification courses are now managed by South Carolina Educational Television (SCETV).
These courses are now called SCETV Teacher Recertification Courses and have been approved through SCDE's Office of Certification. The content of the courses remains the same. The courses are for recertification/nenewal credit only (NO graduate credit). Many of these courses consist of Annenberg/CPB (Corp. for Public Broadcasting) content created in partnership with Boston University and taped in model classrooms across the nation. The others were locally produced in South Carolina.

SC Chronicles Series SCETV Teacher Recertification Courses

The SC Chronicles Series of five courses, each for one hour renewal credit, will enhance the teacher’s understanding of SC history and add a repertoire of material to use in the classroom. The video sessions focus on integrating SC history into the social studies curriculum. As participants gain a greater understanding of the history, they will be able to teach state curriculum standards with an updated historical knowledge of South Carolina history. All class meetings take place through online learning. The facilitator and participants communicate via Moodle course platform on the Internet. Assignments/discussions facilitated in Moodle
SC Chronicles Series I: Geography, Native Americans & Colonial Period Noted South Carolina historian Dr. Walter Edgar discusses key issues in early SC History. Experience an archeological adventure at the Topper dig site in Allendale County, learn about the rise and fall of rice-growing and its impact on the state and find out the true tales of treachery and villainy that occurred off the coast during the Golden Age of Piracy. You will also virtually visit sites around the Palmetto State and learn about their historic and special relevance to South Carolina today.
SC Chronicles Series II: The Winds of Discontent Noted South Carolina historian Dr. Walter Edgar discusses three key issues in early SC History: The winds of discontent in SC, The American Revolution in the Low Country and The American Revolution in the Up Country. Learn about Francis Marion's partisan campaigns during the American Revolution in SC and the historical importance of the Battle of Camden. You will view programs about SC heroines who have shaped our history and virtually visit sites around the Palmetto State to learn about their historic and special relevance to South Carolina today.
SC Chronicles Series III: Post Revolutionary Noted South Carolina historian Dr. Walter Edgar discusses key issues in early SC History: Life and Culture in the New States 1786-1808, The Antebellum Period 1793-1822 and Southern Discontent 1830-1860. Participants learn about Charles Pinckney, the Forgotten Founder who contributed to the birth of our nation and the construction of the Santee Canal, considered the first “true” canal in this country. Participants will view a program about the Grimke Sisters who spoke out at an early age against slavery and virtually visit sites around the Palmetto State to learn about their historic relevance to SC today.
SC Chronicles Series IV: Civil War Noted South Carolina historian Dr. Walter Edgar discusses key issues in SC History. South Carolina and the Civil War are discussed in three lessons: Secession from the Union, Beginning of the Civil War and Civil War in South Carolina. Participants will learn about political events, personalities, military campaigns, participation of African Americans, and the upheaval of this period in SC. We will visit the SC State Museum as they focus on the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War and the course also includes The Story of Mary Boykin Chestnut and her writings, which became "A Diary from Dixie."
SC Chronicles Series V: Art and Culture Noted South Carolina historian Dr. Walter Edgar discusses key issues in SC History. SC art and architecture are discussed: 1) Art and Architecture, 2) Frontier, 3) Art and Purchasing, 4) Colonial Education. SC music and musicians are discussed: 1) Southern Music, 2) Blending of Musical Cultures, 3) Spoleto Festival, 4) Opera Houses and Theaters. The course includes programs from the SC State Museum Resources for Educators featuring exhibits of SC pottery, stoneware, baskets, and quilts. Included are highlights from the Holcombe family stoneware collection, ranging from exquisite pottery from the old Edgefield district, the highly-recognized slave potter Dave and South Carolina Silver: Varieties in Society, 1750 through 1910. The course will also explore the work of local authors and artists and virtually visit Brookgreen Gardens, a National Historic Landmark located on the coast of South Carolina and the Gullah-Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor.
