Prepare students by using information learned in the Annenberg Education and other ETV courses. Many jobs today focus on issues that affect global communities. As world populations become increasingly connected, integrating global awareness in the classroom is more important, no matter what subject you teach.
Literature and Language Arts
Part of living in a community is learning conversational skills that include valuing each other’s strengths, listening well and explaining thinking clearly. In Engaging with Literature: A Workshop for Teachers, the teacher in program 2 models these behaviors as she guides students in discussions of the text they read.
Find teaching strategies for reading works by American authors with diverse ethnic backgrounds in Teaching Multicultural Literature: A Workshop for the Middle Grades. Or enhance your students’ understanding of literary texts using cultural artifacts that provide background knowledge for the stories they read. Check out Artifacts & Fiction: Workshops in American Literature!
Essential Science for Teachers: Life Science, lesson 7, is about energy flow in communities and helps teachers provide their students with opportunities to explore energy flow among organisms in communities around the world.
Teach students how demographers study human population dynamics by tackling questions on how population growth affects the environment. Look at The Habitable Planet: A Systems Approach to Environmental Science for middle and high school teachers. Plus, ETV has a course for teachers on all levels entitled Environmental Awareness & Conservation in SC and Beyond, Part 1.
