Roots in the River: The Story of the Congaree National Park
“Roots in the River” chronicles the history of the Palmetto State’s national landmark. From the initial attempts to harvest the forest’s massive virgin cypresses in the 1890s through the grass-roots struggles of the 1970s to preserve it; to its classification as a National Park in 2003, the hour-long program is a sweeping look at the breathtaking ecosystem of champion trees, primeval landscapes and diverse plant and animal life in Lower Richland County. The show also features scenes from a recent reunion of the young team of activists from the 1970s that banded together to save the Congaree Swamp.
Through interviews with park preservationists, residents of Lower Richland County, park staff, local environmentalists, and archival as well as present-day footage, the program also examines the powerful story of race and social equity in the historic predominantly African-American community.

Early every weekday morning, a fleet of small motorboats launches from the Mount Arena landing on Sandy Island, taking residents to work along South Carolina’s Grand Strand. The children board the school boat, the Prince Washington, for the daily trip to mainland schools. However, residents do not seem to mind that there are no roads on or off the island. In fact, they fought to keep it this way. The program takes a multi-faceted look at the sensitive issue of environmental development along this stretch of South Carolina’s coastline. A year in the making, this program explores thecomplex issues surrounding the threat of development to Sandy Island, the residents and the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker. Perspectives from all the main players in the debate – from the residents who are descended from freed slaves, to the environmentalists, to the developers themselves – are offered during this unflinching look. Juke Joints and Honky Tonk Legends
Their Gaillard Auditoriums are large, non-descript rooms with wooden tables, metal chairs, and a bar. Their Bi-Lo Center ushers and doormen are friends and family who double as roadies. Yet, for the love of the music, the performers and fans leave their 9 to 5 jobs to venture down the back roads of small southern communities to remote watering holes for down home blues, country and western, and bluegrass entertainment.
This program is an excursion into a larger-than-life culture with roots that trace back to traditional African and folk music. It explores this nonconformist genre and the people who seek to preserve it.

A True Likeness tells the story of a little-known African-American photographer from South Carolina whose posthumous discovery transcended stereotypes and brought to light a significant legacy. Richard Samuel Roberts is heralded as one of the south’s most accomplished photographers of the 1920's and 1930's. He was a self-taught artist with a determination to become a master portrait maker, with every image a true likeness of the subject. But for more than 40 years after his death his work remained lost to all but his family and friends.
