A Potential Funding Source for Southern Filmmakers
People contact ETV and my office everyday with great ideas for documentaries. The biggest challenge is usually funding, especially when the economy is in a recession. Even experienced filmmakers pitching a compelling story with strong characters have a difficult time finding support. One organization is focusing solely on documentary films. The Ford Foundation, known for funding incredible media projects, is dedicating $10 million dollars over five years to support film, video and digital works about urgent social issues. One third of the funding is available through an ongoing open-application process. The other funds will go to major organizations and other Ford Foundations projects that will be enhanced by a documentary film to reach a larger audience. While JustFilms offers a potential funding source for filmmakers, it is highly competitive. The good news is that they are seeking emerging talent with stories that can engage new audiences.
