My hour commute from St. Matthews to Sumter is visually interesting. From the top of Hwy. 601 just as I begin the descent to the bridge (being replaced by a new one two feet away from the existing one), I can see both the SCE&G Wateree Power Plant and International Paper's steam/smoke stacks; the only signs of civilization in an otherwise uninterrupted view of the Congaree River Swamp. Before and after the bridge crossing, fields of cotton, peanuts, and occasional soybean plantings predominate.

Open Windows Bring Delight

There are times when I feel sad for people in fancy houses who don’t have screens on their windows. Back in July I was anything but envious, but now that fall is in the air, I feel sympathy for those who aren’t waking up in the night and reaching for the spread. It is pleasant when we retire now in mid-September, but pure joy when at 2 or 3 AM I’m waking up to a positively cool room. Hitchhiking on Animals

Our hard-headed bird dog, Willis Wimberly, a.k.a. Willie, has been coming back from his romps with the worst stickers in his ears and feathers. Everything is going to seed and many plants use animals as a way to distribute their genetic progeny. Almost every day, I have to get out the haircut scissors and with the utmost care try to de-sticker him. Although Willie has already been decommissioned, he is very nervous when we have to work on his rear end!
