A Rainbow Under the Sea: How do Animals Survive in the Ocean? (Grade 2)
Master Teacher
Geraldine L. Yates
Time Allotment
Five 45-minute sessions.
Overview
This unit will enable students to study ocean animals and how they interact with other animals and plants. Students will learn about characteristics that help ocean animals survive through interdependence with other animals and plants for food and shelter. Students will work in small groups to make a PowerPoint presentation, complete worksheets, and color an "Under the Sea" booklet. The Culminating Activity will be a field trip to an aquarium where the students will observe ocean animals, take digital pictures, and handle some live animals. The photographs will be used to illustrate a class field study notebook.

Introductory Activity
Step 1: Ask your class these questions: "What are some things we share with other people? Why is it important to share?"
Step 2: Tell the class that the story The Rainbow Fish is about the most beautiful fish in the ocean. He has shimmering scales. But he is proud and vain and none of the other fish want to be his friend. He learns how to share by giving away some of his most prized possessions.
Step 3: Begin reading the book to the students. Stop at the bottom of the page that ends with the words, "They turned away when he swam by." Ask the question, "Why would the other fish not have anything to do with Rainbow Fish?" (He wouldn't share.)
Step 4: Continue reading at the top of the page that reads, "What good were the dazzling.." Stop at the bottom of that page that reads, "You will no longer be the most beautiful fish in the sea, but you will discover how to be happy." Ask these questions: "What two ocean animals did Rainbow Fish talk to?" (star fish and octopus) "What good advice did octopus give Rainbow Fish?" (Give a glittering scale to each fish.) "Why was Rainbow Fish happy even though he had given away his most prized possessions?" (He had friends.) "Do you think it is important for animals to share and help each other to survive in the ocean?" (yes)
Now say: "We are going to learn ways fish and plants help each other to survive in the ocean."
Learning Activities
Step 1: Log on to ETV's StreamlineSC Web page to access the five video segments from your Playlist. ( Note to Teacher: It is probably better if you download it to your desktop computer's hard drive or a CD to start with. Many schools actually don't have the band width to live stream.) Students will view segments from Junior Oceanographer: The Life in the Sea . After each segment the class will discuss content questions about the clip.
Step 2: The Focus for Media Interaction questions for 1. "Many Habitats on Earth: The Abundance of Sea Life" (2:12) are "Where do the vast majority of earth's animals live? (in oceans) Why does an eel live in rocky crevasses? (for protection)
Instructions: Locate the video clip on your hard drive or CD. Double click video clip icon. Click on silver circle in the bottom right of the video screen to show full screen. Click the x in the upper right corner when the clip is complete.
Step 3: The Focus for Media Interaction questions for 2. "Plankton: The Base of the Ocean Food Chain" (0:29) are "Why are plankton the most important animals in the ocean?" (They are the major food source for most other ocean animals.) "Where are plankton found in the ocean?" (floating and drifting in the water)
Instructions: Locate the video clip on your hard drive or CD. Double click video clip icon. Click on silver circle in the bottom right of the video screen to show full screen. Click the x in the upper right corner when the clip is complete.

Instructions: Locate the video clip on your hard drive or CD. Double click video clip icon. Click on silver circle in the bottom right of the video screen to show full screen. Click the x in the upper right corner when the clip is complete.
Step 5: The Focus for Media Interaction questions for 4. "What is the Ocean Food Chain?" (1:20) are "Why are kelp and plankton important in the ocean food chain?" (to make oxygen and provide food for other animals) "Why are scavengers important?" (eat dead animals and plants that fall to the ocean floor)
Instructions: Locate the video clip on your hard drive or CD. Double click video clip icon. Click on silver circle in the bottom right of the video screen to show full screen. Click the x in the upper right corner when the clip is complete.
Step 6: The Focus for Media Interaction question for 5. "Life in the Ocean: Survival in the Sea" (0:36) is "What does the food chain create in the ocean?" (a balance of life)
Instructions: Locate the video clip on your hard drive or CD. Double click video clip icon. Click on silver circle in the bottom right of the video screen to show full screen. Click the x in the upper right corner when the clip is complete.
Step 7: Pass out the color book. As the students begin coloring "A Rainbow Under the Sea: Ocean Animals" color book, divide the class into groups of two and give the groups an opportunity to choose an animal from the following list of animals from the coloring book.
