Overview
In this lesson students will learn how to identify and describe character, setting, and plot in various stories from picture books and story videos. A Power Point presentation will be used to introduce story elements. Students will use picture books and story videos to practice identifying and describing the story elements.

Log into the web site and select Subject: Language Arts/Reading, Topic: All, Grade: Gr.2. Click on A Boy, A Dog, and A Frog and select the “a” in front of “Frog Comes to Boy and Dog” (1:35). Add this clip to “My Playlist.” Select Continue button. Click to close window. Repeat same steps for “Danny Visits the Museum” (0:52) from Danny and the Dinosaur and “Gloria Livens Up the Safety Tips” (4:00) from Officer Buckle and Gloria. When finished Log Off

Clip Art for pictures of men, women, boys, and girls)
Who are the characters? - Animals
(pictures of dogs, cats, bears, fish, etc.) - Characters
Characters are the people or animals in the story (picture of a person and picture of an animal) - Where does the story take place?
The setting is the place. (pictures of city, country, tropical scenes, etc.) - When does the story take place?
The setting is the time. (pictures of past, present, future, seasons, etc.) - Setting
The setting is where and when the story takes place (picture of place, season) - What happens

The plot is what happens. (Action pictures) - A Day with Dad

(Connect to Microsoft Office Online. Search Clip Art and Media. Go to animals and then bears. There is a series of pictures on pages 11-14 which show a baby bear and his father doing a variety of things.) - Plot

Select pictures that show a dog chasing a cat and then the cat on the top of a fence from pages 49, 51) - Characters? Setting? Plot? (Pictures of children with obvious story elements. - Log in to http://www.streamlinesc.org/ to download the videos under Media Components.
- Create hand out sheets with the following words
and lines to fill out (2 sets per page):
Title (name of story)
Characters(Who are the people or animals?)
Setting (Where or when does the story take place?)
Plot (What things happen in the story?)
Introductory Activity
The teacher will use the prepared Power Point “Who? What? Where? When?- Story Elements” to introduce the elements of character, setting and plot or make her own. Slides # 11 and 12 are used as review and assessment. Students will examine each picture and discuss orally characters, setting, and plot.
Learning Activities
Step 1: Log on to http://www.streamlinesc.org/ to access StreamlineSC to retrieve the three video segments from your Playlist. (It is probably better if you download it to your desktop computer’s hard drive or a CD to start with. Many schools actually don’t have the band width to live stream) Students will view segments from three story videos. After each segment the class will discuss the characters, setting, or plot.
Step 2: The Focus for Media Interaction question for 1. “Frog Comes to Boy and Dog” (1:35) from A Boy, A Dog, and A Frog is “Who are the characters in this video clip?” Instructions: Locate the video clip on your hard drive or CD. Double click video clip icon. Click on silver circle in the bottom right of the video screen to show full screen. Click the x in the upper right corner when the clip is complete.

Step 4: The Focus for Media Interaction question for 3. “Gloria Livens Up the Safety Tips” (4:00) from Officer Buckle and Gloria is “What are 3 events that make up the plot of the video clip?” Instructions: Locate the video clip on your hard drive or CD. Double click video clip icon. Click on silver circle in the bottom right of the video screen to show full screen. Click the x in the upper right corner when the clip is complete.
Culminating Activity
Step 1: Pairs or small groups of students will examine picture books and determine the characters, setting, and plot.
Step 2: They will fill out the handout sheets made by the teacher. The teacher will decide on how many books each group will review.
Cross-Curricular Extensions
Writing: Materials for writing project: drawing paper, pencils, crayons.Students will show their understanding of story elements by writing and illustrating their own story. They will be able to tell the teacher who their characters are, where and when the story takes place, and at least three events that make up the plot of their story.
Community Connections
- The local police department will be asked to bring the police dog to visit with the students. Students will write and illustrate thank you cards for the policeman and his dog.
Student Materials
The printed hand out is included or will be created by the teacher using a word processing program.
