Overview
By using three Web sites and seeing a segment of the video Seared Souls, students will have background knowledge of the Holocaust to prepare them to read a segment of Night by Elie Wiesel.

Seared Souls, produced by SCETV, traces the story of the Holocaust through the experiences of survivors who became South Carolinians.
Web Sites
Vocabulary Word List for the Holocaust is a worksheet that can be printed off the Web site.
Maps of Concentration Camps in Europe and Jews in Europe in 1939 at start of WW II
Materials

Equipment
- One computer for each student in the computer lab or three students per computer.
- TV
- VCR
Prep for Teachers
Preview the three Web sites:
- Vocabulary Word List for the Holocaust
- Maps of Concentration Camps in Europe and Jews in Europe in 1939 at start of WW II
- Map of Auschwitz
Arrange for the computer lab and bookmark the Internet sites on the students' computers.
Make a copy of Activity Sheets 1 and 2 for each student.
Make sure all students have e-mail addresses and they know your e-mail address.
Preview the video Seared Souls.
When using media, provide students with a Focus for Media Interaction, a specific task to complete and/or information to identify during or after viewing of video segments, Web sites or other multimedia elements,
Introductory Activity (Day 1)
Step 1: Instruct students to visit the Web site for the vocabulary definitions for the Holocaust at http://worksheets.teach-nology.com/soc_studies/holocaust/vocab/.
Step 2: Distribute Activity Sheet 1. Provide students with a Focus for Media Interaction by asking them to fill in the definitions of the vocabulary words on the activity sheet.
Learning Activity
Step 1: Instruct students to access

Step 2: Distribute Activity Sheet 2. Provide students with a Focus for Media Interaction by asking them to follow the directions on the activity sheet, answer the questions, put their answers in a Word Document, and e-mail them to you.
Culminating Activity (Day 2)
Step 1: Students will view the video Seared Souls. Explain that the people talking are survivors of the Holocaust who came to America after the war and settled in South Carolina.
Step 2: START the video when you hear this phrase: "This led to the Holocaust." Continue until The Gathering Storm. FAST FORWARD to the Wannsee Conference. CONTINUE until the end of this colored segment. FAST FORWARD until you see Ben Stern-Poland (he is one of the survivors who is interviewed). CONTINUE until the end of the next segment of Ben Stern-Poland. This will be about 25 to 30 minutes.Step 2: Instruct students to write a paragraph of no less than eight sentences telling what they learned about the Holocaust from the video. They should pay special attention to what they did not know before the film. The paragraph should include at least five specific details. The thesis sentence should be: The film Seared Souls increased my understanding of the Holocaust.
Assessment
Use the e-mail Word Document of the Learning Activity and the paragraph from the Culminating Activity for the student Assessment.
Cross-Curricular Extensions
Art/Design: Design an advertisement for the program Seared Souls.
Community Connections
Invite any local survivor or relative of a survivor from a concentration camp to come and share their memories.
