South Carolina ETV
Exercise and Muscles (Grade 8)
Master Teacher
Nancy T. Vickers
Time Allotment
One 40-minute classes
Overview
Understanding the anatomical muscular structure of the body is important when applying the concept of weight lifting to an individualize fitness program. Identifying the specific muscle or muscle group utilized in various weight lifting stations can assist a student or athlete in achieving their healthy or athletic goal. The class will engage in a hands-on lesson of identifying the primary and secondary muscles used when lifting weights. They will also use an Internet site to learn the proper terminology for labeling these muscles.
Subject Matter
Physical Education
Learning Objectives
Students will be able to:
- correctly perform an exercise on a weight machine
- identify and label the primary muscles used to perform the exercise
- identify and label the secondary muscles used to perform the exercise
South Carolina Standards
These Standards can be found online at Office of Curriculum Standards.
Standard 4: Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level of physical fitness.
Students will be introduced to principles of training and convey how these principles can be used to improve physical fitness.
Students will interpret results of fitness testing tools and use this information to set individual goals.
Media Components
Web Sites
This Muscular System Web site is a front and back view of a human body's muscular system. This interactive site will allow the student to point the mouse on a particular muscle and the name appear within seconds. The students will access this site in the computer lab after the lesson's activity has been completed.
Diagram of the Muscular System. The teacher will use this site of the muscular system as a diagram for the students to mark the muscles used on the weight machine. The teacher will need to preview this site, print image, and white out the names of the muscles before making copies. The site A Look Inside the Human Body is for educational use
Materials
- Weight room equipment:
- bench press
- squat machine
- leg extension
- leg curl
- lat. pull down
- pec. machine
- shoulder press
- AB machine
- row machine
- preacher's curl
Prep For Teachers
Prior to teaching this lesson:
Bookmark web sites to be easily accessed by the students.
Check weight room for safety.
Copy diagram of the muscular system (1 per student).
Use this site of the muscular system as a diagram for the students to mark the muscles used on the weight machine. The teacher will need to preview this site, cut and paste the diagram, print the front and back view, and white out the names of the muscles before making copies.
When using media, provide students with a Focus for Media Interaction, a specific task to complete and/or information to identify during or after viewing of video segments, Web sites or other multimedia elements.
Introductory Activity
Step 1: As a class, initiate a discussion on exercises performed in Physical Education class. Ask the question, " Name two warm-up exercises that would prepare a body for a physical activity." (Expect answers like, "push-ups and sit-ups.")
Step 2: Ask the students to name the major muscle groups used when performing these warm-up exercises. (Expect answers like "arm muscles, stomach muscles," etc.)
Step 3: Inform the students of the day's objective: identifying specific muscles used when lifting weights.
Step 4: The students will form partners and decide which of the following weight machine exercises they will use to perform the assignment: bench press, squat machine, leg extension, leg curl, lat. pull down, pec. machine, shoulder press, AB machine, row machine, preacher's curl.
Step 5: The students will use the diagram of the muscular system to mark the primary and secondary muscles used to perform the exercise.
Learning Activity
Step 1: In the computer lab, the partners will go to the bookmarked Web page. Provide a Focus for Media Interaction by asking students to remember where on their body they felt the muscle contract. They will use this site to label the muscular diagram with the correct terminology.
Step 2: The students will identify the primary muscles used in their exercise by coloring them red with a marker.
Step 3: The students will identify the secondary muscles used in their exercise by coloring them blue with a marker.
Culminating Activity
Step 1: The students will share their findings with the class by describing the weight machine selected for the activity. They will name the muscles worked by this machine and explain where on the body each of the muscles is located.
Cross-Curricular Extensions
Language Arts: The students will write in their journal how muscles would feel if overworked.
Physiology of Exercise: The students will explain what sport skill or movement would benefit from strengthening this muscle.
Science: Explore the biochemistry of the use steroids and performance-enhancing drugs has on strength.
Community Connections
Visit your local YMCA, gym or athletic club and tour the variety of strengthening equipment available within the community.
Invite the school's weight lifting coach (football) to speak to the class about the benefit working out with weights has on the athletic fields.
Student Materials
- pencils
- markers (1 red and 1 blue per student)
- one computer per two students
- diagram of the Muscular System from Web site
