Overview
Students will take a virtual field trip around the state of South Carolina, visiting sites of historical interest and popular tourist attractions. The trip guide they follow will allow them to use real-life problem-solving strategies.
Steps
1. Divide students into small teams to solve the math problems.
2. To begin, please print a copy of Activity Sheet 1 containing the problems.
3. Students may access information via the Internet, but sufficient data is contained on the worksheets to answer the problems if access is not available. Do encourage students to use the Internet to build familiarity with this resource as an exciting educational tool.
4. Student groups should develop travel guides based on the Katie and Ben's trip around South Carolina.
5. Student groups may use the links to sights in South Carolina to solve additional math problems.
Culminating Activity
Student groups will publish their travel guides.
Community Connection
Students may wish to publish their Sandlapper Solutions, additional problems, and travel guides on their classroom Web site.
Teacher Notes
The attached worksheet contains a series of questions and problems that students will solve as they visit the listed Web sites. Each site is a tourist attraction or historical site in South Carolina and the problems involve real-life situations. Students will be required to eliminate unnecessary information and identify the pertinent facts of each problem.
