Previewing Activities
1. Tell the children a story without using a book. Possibly use a few puppets or stuffed animals.
2. Have a trunk (like the one in the video) or box
with different toys in it. Let the
children see it and guess what might be in it, but keep it closed until after
the video is shown.
Focus for Viewing
Use words similar to these to give students a focus for viewing:
"Truman and Kate are at their grandpa's toy shop. Their friend DJ is with them. While looking around the shop, they discover a trunk. They open it. Watch and listen to find out what is in the trunk and what the children do with the trunk's contents."
Viewing Activities
Begin the video at the point where Kate and DJ find the trunk and are trying to open it with the Magic Key. Pause the video before Kate starts her story about Noddy. Ask how the children got the trunk open? Ask students to name what the children found in the trunk. (Noddy, a taxi, Martha Monkey, a policeman, Big Ears, Toyland.) Why did the children choose those names for the toys? (Noddy's head nods and that's the name of the shop, Big Ears has big ears, etc.)
Say to students, "Listen for what is wrong with Noddy's car and why there is a problem when he tries to get it fixed." Start video where Kate begins telling story and pause before Kate finishes her part of story and tells DJ that maybe he can tell the rest of the story. Discuss the story that Kate has created. Ask, "What was wrong with Noddy's taxi?" "Why couldn't Mr. Sparks fix the bumper on Noddy's taxi?"
Overview
The video episode deals with DJ's first visit to the Noddy shop
and how the children discover new things about the
store. This lesson will focus on using the part of
the video that demonstrates using imagination to tell
stories and play with toys. Kate and DJ find a locked
trunk while exploring the store. When they open it,
they find many toys inside. The
children begin describing and naming the toys. Kate begins to tell a story
using the toys as characters. Later, DJ continues the story where Kate left
off.
Educational Theme
We can have fun creating stories by using our imagination.
Developmental Theory
Everyone can be a storyteller when we use our imagination. We can work with another person and create a story together.
Learning Objectives
The students will be able to:
- recall details in a story such as characters, plot, and setting.
- create a verbal story about a toy of his/her choice.
- work cooperatively with a partner to create a story.
Materials
- different toys children can choose from to create stories
- paper
- crayons, markers, pens, pencils
ITV Series
Noddy, Program #101, "The Magic Key"
"What happened to Clockwork Mouse and why did that happen?" "Where did Noddy and Big Ears go?" "What did they find when Big Ears fell down the hill?"
Say, "Listen and watch for who tells the story next and what happens to Noddy because of the Magic Key." Resume playing the video where Grandpa Noah comes into the shop and joins the children. Pause where Big Ears tells Noddy that Clockwork Mouse shouldn't use the Magic Key either. Ask, "Who told the story now?" (DJ) "What happened to Noddy's car when he started it with the Magic Key?" "Why did Noddy say he would not use the Magic Key in his taxi anymore?"
Post-Viewing Activities
1. Students can make up possible endings to the Noddy story by starting with Noddy crashing into the tree. 2. Students can draw a picture of their favorite part of the Noddy story. Child can dictate text and teacher can write under picture.
3. Open the trunk or box of toys and let
children free play with the toys. Then allow them time to create a story for
the toys they have chosen. Two to four children could work together. Videotape
or tape record stories, if possible, so that children and parents can see
and/or hear them again.
Extensions
1. Create puppets using old tube-style
athletic socks, buttons, yarn, and markers. Make puppets from cereal boxes
covered with paper or fabric. Use stuffed animals. Have a puppet show!
